Why is my dog trembling and panting after ACL surgery? Is it pain?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 8 years and 8 months old | 57 lbs

My dog had ACL surgery 6 days ago. Since day 3, she is occassionaly trembling and/or panting (temperature and wound are ok). One of my ideas was that she is in pain, but she was on painkillers till yesterday. Another my idea was that it could be stress due to incapability to move and run along. When she is relaxed and sleeps, the trembling is gone, but if you come home or she stands up to go outside, or you come to give her cuddles - she starts trembling. What could that be and is it normal?

Hello, I am sorry to hear about Naida.

The signs that you are describing could definitely be signs of pain. After surgery some pets need additional pain medications to help manage any residual pain they are experiencing. It sounds that Naida is anticipating that her leg will be uncomfortable. If these signs do not resolve within the next few days I would recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian so that they can examine the limb and consider prescribing additional pain medications.

Hope this helps, good luck!
