My puppy had surgery. Should I worry about his panting and licking?

Abdominal surgery is a serious surgery, especially when infection is involved. So sleeping a lot would be normal and one way of healing. The shivering and panting is likely caused by pain, so make sure she takes her pain medicine on time. Best let her rest. She may not be hungry today, which is okay. Make sure she has fresh water available. She should be a lot better tomorrow.

While drainage is normal post-surgery, heavy breathing, discomfort, or excessive pain, especially while already on medications, are not. If Bailey is in severe distress or is turning blue or pale, or is panting heavily, it would be best to bring her into emergency care ASAP. If she seems stable, but is in discomfort or painful, contacting your vet to bring her in is also a good idea.

It' s best to have her checked over as soon as you vet it's open. It does not sound like anything too concerning, for sure she must have an upset stomach ( licking lips is normally a sign of nausea ). When it' s breakfast time try with a smaller portion of food and see if eating or at least interested and report to your vet.

If thick brown puss is coming from a wound I would recommend bringing him to a vet as soon as possible. If it ends up being nothing major at least they can provide him pain medication to help him feel better. Panting can be a sign of pain or discomfort. I would recommend calling your vet and letting them know about the panting. If she isn't on a pain medication then she may need some, or need additional medication. Also be sure her gums look nice and pink. If they are pale in color then she needs to be seen right away. Other signs to watch for would include lethargy, decreased appetite, heat or swelling or discharge around her incision, or fever (rectal temperature over 102.5). If these occur, she needs to see the vet ASAP.

I think that with any abnormal behavior you should call your vet for advice since they knew all that went on. I'm assuming he is taking some medications? The excessive panting could be from that. I think you should just check in with them to be on the safe side!

It could indicate pain or general disturbance in that area, if you can upload a picture of the surgical site in a new question it can be helpful, i will probably be able to tell you if it looks infected or not.
