My dog's treats got hard in a jar. Are they still safe to feed?

Dogs don't have a preference, but you should! By that I mean you should give Chloe treats she needs to chew in several bites. If she swallows one whole that's smaller, it could cause some problems. Better for her to chew them up.

Properly stored, they may last about 8-12 months before becoming stale or contaminated. An air tight container in a dry, dark location is best. Freezing may extend shelf life, especially regarding homemade biscuits. I would hesitate to use biscuits that are two years old regardless of storage method.

What happens is the chewing causes tiny microfractures in the teeth which can eventually result in a big slab fracture of the chewing teeth, requiring emergency dental surgery. I'd also be worried about the sharp shards, as I am not aware of any studies demonstrating the fragments dissolve in the stomach before passing through into the intestines. When you are looking for a chewing treat, try the "fingernail test" - if you can't make an indent in the treat with your fingernail, then it is too hard for your dog's teeth. As with any treat, as long as it isn't causing Chloe to have any vomiting, diarrhea or inappetence, small amounts of treats in moderation are fine for most dogs. If she is dealing with a weight issue, there are low calorie treats that are available as well.

I would recommend contacting the manufacturer of the treat. They will have first-hand knowledge of what is in the treats and how stable it is under those conditions. If you are not sure if the treats are safe then I would not feed them to your dog.

Hi there! It is possible that she choke up on the treat just because it was too big or just because she ate it too fast. To be sure, it is always best to feed them treats that are not too big for their size as choking is always possible. I would ensure that they are small enough for her.
