Dog tooth abscess & swollen eye. How to help until vet visit?

I would add that I think it's unlikely for a tooth root abscess to cause the eye to actually pop out (Proptose) however without definitive treatment the problem (the bulging and the infection) are going to get worse. Having that pocket of infection in the gum will likely cause the bacteria to translocate to the bloodstream, where it could cause other problems, including with the heart and the liver. I would consider seeking another opinion, perhaps of a veterinary dentist. I have anesthetized many, many older dogs for tooth removal, and my personal opinion is that removing diseased teeth is necessary. If Enzo has blood work prior to surgery, and possibly even a chest x-ray to check his heart and lungs, in the hands of a qualified veterinarian who is confident with anesthesia and dentistry he will likely do fine. If you don't have the tooth removed, your only other alternative is using antibiotics in a "pulse" fashion, such as 3 weeks on antibiotics, followed by 1 week off. Clindamycin is sometimes used in this fashion, but again, results are suboptimal and the infection within the root pocket will never completely resolve - it may improve, but it won't resolve.

Unfortunately there is not much you can give to fight the infection over the counter, you will need to get an antibiotic for Rico if this is a tooth root abscess. I would recommend Well and Good Buffered Aspirin from Petco for pain. I would not rely on this solely for treatment but more for managing his pain until you can get him in to be seen by a veterinarian. If this is a tooth root abscess, he will need this tooth removed, so I would get him in to be seen by a veterinarian sooner rather than later to have his teeth addressed. I hope this helps!

Hello. This sounds like a Carnassial tooth root abscess ( 4th upper premolar ). This is a very common dental infection & usually means the tooth needs to be removed. At the very least, he definitely needs to be started on antibiotics & needs a good dental cleaning. Once done, these things tend to heal up very nicely. Poor Ginger! I cannot say for sure without seeing her in person, but this looks like a tooth root abscess. I would continue the warm compresses until you are able to get her seen by your vet. If this is the cause, your vet will likely put her on some antibiotics and also recommend to have the tooth causing the issue to be extracted. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon!

I suspect it may be a rapidly growing abscess. Tooth root abscesses usually result in swelling just below the eye. Please, clean the skin and the eye with boiled, warm water and cotton buds and make sure Yoda is not scratching or rubbing the face. Then take her to your local vets as soon as they open in the morning. If she looking very unwell or she is in a lot of pain, call your local emergency service tonight.

Hello. I am sorry for your concerns about Freyja. It does look like she has a tooth root abscess, most likely involving the 4th upper premolar. Antibiotics usually clears the infection very nicely, but often the tooth needs to be removed. As long as Freyja is eating well & is in no significant discomfort, you can wait to have her seen. You may try applying an ice pack wrapped in a small towel to the swollen or painful area. I DO NOT recommend giving him any pain medications that intended for humans, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I recommend contacting your veterinarian during normal business hours to ask for other suggestions. If it has been this long and he is still painful, there may be a complication that needs to be addressed. I hope this is helpful!
