My dog has a cheek abscess. Can I wait for the vet? What can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 7 months and 11 days old | 75 lbs

My dog may have an abscess on her cheek. The vet can't see her until Saturday. The emergency pet care facility is not within my driving vicinity. Will she be okay until Saturday or is it life threatening? If she can wait, what can I do to easy'm ease her days? Though she shows no sign of discomfort I doggie she must some.

Hello. I am sorry for your concerns about Freyja. It does look like she has a tooth root abscess, most likely involving the 4th upper premolar. Antibiotics usually clears the infection very nicely, but often the tooth needs to be removed. As long as Freyja is eating well & is in no significant discomfort, you can wait to have her seen. Placing a warm compress over the area should help with drainage. I would do this for 10 minutes 2-3 times a day. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

It looks like Freyja Luna may have a tooth root abscess. They can get swelling on the side of their face and it can actually abscess on the outside of their mouths.

I would call your veterinarian and see if they can get you in any sooner then Saturday. Freyja Luna needs antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. Most likely will also need to be scheduled for a dental if it is definitively a tooth root abscess.

There are multiple veterinarians in the area where your zip code is so if your veterinarian cannot get you in you can try calling others.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Freyja!

I would find a Vet that will see her today or tomorrow. I don’t think you should wait 4 more days. It appears to be an abscess (puss pocket from a bacterial infection) on the left side of her face. The abscess should be opened up, flushed and antibiotics and pain medications started.

Poor Ginger! I cannot say for sure without seeing her in person, but this looks like a tooth root abscess. I would continue the warm compresses until you are able to get her seen by your vet. This is definitely suspicious of an abscess. I've also seen trauma (hit their face on something hard) cause fluid swelling that looks the same, so hopefully this is the case rather than an abscess. Either way, it's not an emergency and he is safe to wait until morning to see the vet. I hope that helps and Ace gets better soon.

Given the location, it could be a tooth root abscess. It isn't an emergency, but is likely uncomfortable. If Dolly is behaving normally, she can probably see her veterinarian in the morning. An oral exam can be done to determine if there is periodontal disease and if so, if it is severe enough to cause an abscess. A complete dental cleaning and possibly extractions may be necessary. If an abscess is ruled out, your veterinarian can perform a fine needle aspirate of the lump to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. Treatment options can be discussed once results are returned.

You can use a hot compress on the area to see if you can get the infection to drain. That should help relieve some of the pain. While I prefer to use specific dog pain medications you can give aspirin to help with the pain. I give it with a meal. There is a section on this website with information about common over the counter medications that you can give and the recommended dosage. The veterinarian will probably put Chico on antibiotics and schedule a dental cleaning with an extraction if needed. I’m glad you are taking him in soon as this is quite painful. My dog's abscessed tooth is draining. Can I use OTC antibiotics?

I'm sorry to hear that. Giving antibiotics will only be a temporary fix. If she has an abscessed tooth, it is because the tooth is the problem. I'm not sure why your veterinarian thought 8 years was too old, but perhaps Sadie has other medical problems I am not aware of. Antibiotics could temporarily help, but unfortunately, I would suspect once the antibiotics were stopped, it will open back up and start draining again. I recommend trying to save up, or searching online to see if there happens to be a low cost income based clinic in your area, so that the tooth can be removed. My dog's jaw abscess burst. Is it okay to wait until morning for vet?

Let the abscess drain and if you like you can take some cotton wool and wipe off the pus. A ruptured abscess is not an emergency, so there is ample time to wait and take him in to a veterinarian tomorrow.

My dog has a painful lump. Is it an emergency or can it wait?

I think this is not an emergency and can wait to be seen tomorrow. The only thing that may happen is that this abscess bursts until then. If that happens, gently wipe off the pus, do not flush or put ointment on the wound, leave it as it is. It is likely painful at the moment, but once the abscess bursts the pain will be over. Your vet will lance and flush the abscess and prescribe an antibiotic if needed.
