My husky is 7. Is she too old to safely get pregnant and have puppies?

While it is recommended to wait until a dog's second or third heat to get them pregnant, there are dogs who get pregnant on their first heat and are fine. Chances are she will be ok, but I would schedule regular checks up with her vet to make sure the pregnancy is progressing well. In addition, when it's around time for her to give birth, you need to familiarize yourself with signs of dystocia (difficulty giving birth) so you can seek immediate veterinary care as needed. In the pet's information, you have it listed that Cookie is spayed. If Cookie is spayed, she is unable to become pregnant. However, if that is incorrect, I am not sure if Cookie has had a litter of puppies before. A dog that has never been bred before who is an older dog such as yours might have problems whelping due to the pelvic bones losing their elasticity making for a very hard labor. Your dog may need a c-section to deliver. I would be prepared for this in advance. In addition, I would consider having her spayed at the time of c section (if she has a c section) because pregnancy is hard on older dogs, and I would not recommend her having another litter after this one. There is a higher chance than normal for a difficult delivery due to her age, and there some signs to look out for, such as a foul smelling discharge during labor, strong steady contractions for over an hour without any puppies being produced, the mother is very tired and/or vomiting during labor. I would suggest speaking to your vet about additional signs to look out for labor, and having your vet examine Cookie to make sure she is healthy during this pregnancy.

Ideally, she should not be bred until she is at least 2 years old. This will ensure she is fully develop and able to maintain and whelp a litter. It is likely you will not be able to complete any genetic testing or infectious disease testing on her and any potential stud before she is no longer receptive. A complete exam with your veterinarian if there are concerns about her current growth/condition.

You can also elect to have your male dog neutered within the next several days to eliminate the risk of pregnancy. If Iris becomes pregnant, she is unlikely to have issues giving birth, as most Huskies have pelvic canals which are proportional to their body size, and it is not certain that the puppies will be the exact size of the father (it is more likely that they will be somewhere in the middle). Your vet can also use x-rays and ultrasound to monitor the size of the puppies as Iris comes closer to term and recommend a c-section if necessary. It is usually safe to have pups at her age, especially since she has had previous litters. Seven is old to have puppies, but hopefully she will be ok. After she weans her puppies, I would have her spayed to prevent her from having anymore puppies. Dogs over the age of six should never be bred. I hope this helps.
