My 6-year-old pug is in heat. Is she too old to breed for the first time?

Hi, I think 8 years old it's far too old for a dog to breed. If she should get pregnant she is at risk of complications during pregnancy and likelihood of having puppies with malformations. A bit like having a babies when you are in your seventies.

They can continue to get pregnant until they stop having heat cycles, which can be older than you would think. She is very borderline, i personally would not recommend to mate her, she is already in very high risk to develop mammary gland tumors and each year she is not spayed, the risk go up. at her age, instead of mating her i would definitely recommend to have her spayed.

Anecdotally speaking seven years seems a bit old to start a dog breeding. As they get older they tend to have problems such as difficult labor's, uterine infections as well as eclampsia. If you really want to breed your dog I recommend you discuss with your veterinarian risks specific to your dog as well as what male you would be breeding her to as that could affect her ability to have puppies naturally.
