Why is my dog still tired after a long illness and on recovery meds?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

My dog has recently been very ill for about 2 months. She had a fever of unknown origin and an ALT of 2200. Most of her bloodwork yesterday was normal with her ALT being 42. She has been off antibiotics for 4 days now and as of yesterday not running a fever. She is also now eating some on her own but supplemented with e tube feedings, as needed. She is taking prednisone, ondansetron and metoclopramide. However, she is still having very little energy and wants to sleep. When will energy return?

She is on a lot of meds and probably still not completely out of the woods yet. Medications such as ondansetron can also be a little sedating for dogs as well. It would be hard to put an exact timeline on when she'll be better, but energy should gradually return as she begins to eat more, and her body finishes fighting what is making her ill.
