My puppy choked on food. Is being tired normal after this trauma?

That must have been so scary for you! Good on you for getting Scooby into a vet immediately. Yes, is it normal for him to want to sleep. The pain medications, depending on which one he was given, can cause lethargy as a side effect. It will also have been very stressful for him, and that would cause him to be lethargic as well. Hello. Yes, aspiration pneumonia would show up immediately with coughing, gagging & a very high respiratory rate. I only mentioned this to you yesterday because of the danger of inducing vomiting in a potentially choking dog. You said that Precious was fine, so I was not worried. Pneumonia isn't guaranteed if milk is aspirated once, but it can happen and it would take a few days for it to develop. I would continue to monitor him, and should his breathing become raspy, his appetite decreases, or he become lethargic, I would take him into the vet right away.

I am sorry to hear this! Typically a sensitivity to a food change would have symptoms like an upset stomach such as diarrhea so if it is mainly lethargy it may or may not be related.... Anytime a puppy of that age is acting lethargic for longer than a day or two warrants a check up. If it has only been a few hours, I would try to get her to do some of her normal activities like playing or walking to see if she perks up. If she still seems to feel dumpy you may want to take her in to be safe! I hope this helps and that she feels herself again soon!

If he's still breathing weird, then it's possible he may have inhaled some of the grissle. This would require a visit to the vet, so they can remove it; or it may cause damage to the lungs and/or cause infection. If the weird breathing stopped after an hour, then he'll likely be fine and there's nothing more you need to do. Just keep an eye out for any other respiratory issues like coughing, because he still has potential to get pneumonia from aspirating the food. This would require a veterinary visit also, because pneumonia can be very damaging to the lungs. I hope that helps and Lucian is OK.

If the cough is occurring every now and then and your dog seems comfortable, I would not worry about it. It will take some time, (3-4days ), for the inflammation to disappear completely. If at any point symptoms should get worse, then it' s worthy to take another look at him.

I would be concerned that Bell hasn't returned to normal after 12-24 hours. While heat injury is possible usually dogs have issues sooner than now such as seizures, diarrhea, bruising and/or collapse. She could have a problem with her GI tract, something stuck in her esophagus or even a respiratory issues causing her changes. If she continues to cough, seems lethargic/lack of energy, or has any vomiting, diarrhea or continues to have a decreased appetite today she needs to be seen by a veterinarian. I would try calling your veterinarian today as they sometimes have an oncall service or an emergency veterinarian on call to answer questions as well.
