My dog got flea treatment & grooming, but I found a tick. Is it dead?

Absolutely YES!!! I would recommend to have him checked by your veterinarian so an effective treatment to prevent tick infestation can be given as well.. Typically, a topical treatment works by killing the flea when it bites the dog and sucks it's blood. Because it was live on your dog, it hadn't had a chance yet to bite him and diet. Even if there are more, they will die as soon as they bite your dog thanks to your stringent flea treatments. It's not something I would worry about since he's treated and you found no more on him, but if you wanted to be safe, you can give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes, and it's safe to give him now. I really think it was one he picked up outside. I hope this helps!

This is a tick. The picture is not detailed enough to identify the exact species of tick, but no need to worry about that at this time. Since you have given Nexgard (which should kill ticks), then there are two things that could have happened. 1). The ticks were dead when you removed them. If they were not wiggling around and came out easily, then they were dead. 2) The Nexgard didn't work. It happens sometimes that the product (for some reason) didn't work. In that case you can just try a different product that is labeled for ticks. Sorry, I can't recommend any single product. There are so many and none that I know to be better than the other. If you try a new product, then just make sure it is only applied after the Nexgard is next due. I hope that helps.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If your dog is on flea and tick prevention then that would cause the tick to die after it was attached. Most preventatives do not repell and the tick needs to attach and start to feed before the product kills them. Otherwise, the tick just may h ave simply died. They stay attached despite being dead. Are you sure it was a tick (just checking!!)? It had 8 legs? It may have been in a hibernating state if where you live is cold. Depending on the amount of time the tick was on depends on what disease may have been transmitted. With flea and tick products though some repel and others kill in contact. Being as though you found the tick dead, the vectra seems to have worked. I would not panic necessarily at this time however monitor the bite(s) and make sure they are healing well. During an annual vet visit, to be safe, you can always ask to have something called a 3DX done or a 4DX done. These test are blood test that test for tick Bourne diseases as well as heartworms

Do you not have him on a tick prevention product? That is what I would use on him to make sure all the ticks are killed and then apply it monthly to keep killing any ticks he may pick up. Congratulations on adding Max to your family! Max will need to have his vaccines before he can be groomed so he will need to see the veterinarian. The best products for ticks are oral products like Simparica and Nexgard. You will need approval from your veterinarian to get these products. Seresto collars and Frontline will also kill ticks. Depending on where you live, if tick borne diseases are common, it may also be recommended to start Max on an antibiotic to try to prevent tick borne diseases. Heartworm testing and likely prevention will also be recommended. Certainly you may be able to look into vaccine clinics or low cost clinics which may be able to offer most or all of these services (you will need to check if they can address the tick borne illness issue). You may also look into the wellness programs offered by VCA and Banfield if they are in your area. Sometimes this is an affordable way to get the normal preventive care items for pets.
