Rescued dog has ticks, low income. What to do before Petco grooming?

There are several possibilities here: 1) you pick off the ticks with tweezers and drop them in a glass with rubbing alcohol to kill them. Carefully grab the tick as close as possible with tweezers and pull straight up. If the head stays in the skin it is not a problem, evntually the dog's skin will reject it. 2) you can get some "Bravecto" or Nexguard from your vet. It is a chew that will, when given to the dog, kill all parasites on the dog including ticks. You may still have to pull off the dead ticks. But Bravecto and Nexguard will keep the dog form getting attacked by fleas, ticks and mites for a few months. Costs vary from vet to vet and area to area, so the best would be to call your vet and/or the vets in your area and inquire about their fees. The shelter where you picked up the dog should actually tell you which vet will remove the stitches for free,

He needs a tick preventative such as Bravecto, Nexgard, or even Advantix over the counter can kill ticks quickly and prevent them for 30 days. Please get him on a tick preventative soon and visit your vet soon if you notice any symptoms of tick bite disease (i.e. anorexia, lethargy, fever or lameness). You should also avoid areas that he could be exposed to with high tick populations. Keep him out of the woods and consider getting your yard treated for. Usually the second round of vaccines is applied at around 10-12 weeks. However, you should be ok as long as you continue the vaccine schedule as recommended by a veterinarian. The next step is having them provide you with a vaccine record. If you have recently started using Frontline, then it is fair to give it a few weeks to see if it helps. If you see ticks it is important to remove them. If you see more fleas, I recommend a product called Capstar which can help kill a lot of fleas at once. I do think that it would be best to have Teddy evaluated by a veterinarian sooner than 3 weeks as he is likely due for the next round of vaccines. Good luck and have a great day!

If you are seeking the care of a vet for your pet, I would recommend searching for local vets to your region and establishing a relationship with one, particularly with a new puppy. As far as flea/tick medications, there are many options that come in many different formulations ranging from topical, collars, orals, and injectable drugs. If a pet is heavily infested with fleas, typically we use a drug to kill all the live fleas first and follow that up with the preventative, whichever one you and your vet agree upon. In most instances, these drugs work quite different dependent upon your geographic location so this would once again be a discussion with your vet. The cost of the medication will largely depend upon which one you choose and where you end up obtaining it. Also, dependent upon the extent of the flea infestation, additional treatments may be suggested to get Khloe back on the right track. Hope this makes sense.

The first thing you need to do is to take him to a veterinarian for an exam to make sure he is healthy, He can then be vaccinated and wormed. Check for fleas or have the vet check for fleas and get some flea medication/prevention. It also is a good idea to ask your veterinarian about a heart worm test and heart worm preventatives, Depending on the condition of his fur, whether it is very matted or just long, clean or dirty, he likely needs a bath with dog shampoo, and then you can take him to a groomer to be groomed or shaved.

Where there is one tick, there could be more. Any time you go outside with Max, he needs to be checked thoroughly for ticks. If he is over 7 weeks old, a Seresto flea and tick collar is safe, just make sure he can't chew on it! You can also purchase Frontline spray - spray a small amount on a towel and use the towel to wipe down Max.

The best way to get rid of ticks would be to use an oral tick preventive like Nexgard or Simparica. You give him a tablet and the ticks will die. If you use it every month, it will prevent the vast majority of ticks from attaching to Oli. If you cannot get one of these products, wash him in a flea and tick shampoo. Make sure to read the directions carefully as it often requires you to leave the shampoo in contact with the skin for 10 minutes or so. Each product is different and will tell you the appropriate directions. Brushing him will also help. In some parts of the world, ticks can transmit diseases.
