My dog has dead ticks stuck on his skin after bathing. Should I worry?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If your dog is on flea and tick prevention then that would cause the tick to die after it was attached. Most preventatives do not repell and the tick needs to attach and start to feed before the product kills them. Otherwise, the tick just may h ave simply died. They stay attached despite being dead. Are you sure it was a tick (just checking!!)? It had 8 legs? It may have been in a hibernating state if where you live is cold. I would recommend using a flea and tick preventative such as Frontline, Nexgard or Bravecto. He will likely need a shampoo to help soothe his skin after the ticks die. The best way to get rid of ticks would be to use an oral tick preventive like Nexgard or Simparica. You give him a tablet and the ticks will die. If you use it every month, it will prevent the vast majority of ticks from attaching to Oli. If you cannot get one of these products, wash him in a flea and tick shampoo. Make sure to read the directions carefully as it often requires you to leave the shampoo in contact with the skin for 10 minutes or so. Each product is different and will tell you the appropriate directions. Brushing him will also help. In some parts of the world, ticks can transmit diseases. I recommend to call your local veterinarian and ask if any further action needs to be taken. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I recommend to use an additional product for ticks if he is going to be going into tick infested areas on a routine basis. This could be an oral preventive like Simparica or Nexgard. You should also use a tick collar like Preventic collar. You could also use one of the above mentioned oral products and something like Proheart or Interceptor for ticks. I recommend to discuss the best option with your veterinarian. Use a magnifying glass and make sure not to handle the tick with your bare skin. Depending on the amount of time the tick was on depends on what disease may have been transmitted. With flea and tick products though some repel and others kill in contact. Being as though you found the tick dead, the vectra seems to have worked. I would not panic necessarily at this time however monitor the bite(s) and make sure they are healing well. During an annual vet visit, to be safe, you can always ask to have something called a 3DX done or a 4DX done. These test are blood test that test for tick Bourne diseases as well as heartworms

This is a tick. The picture is not detailed enough to identify the exact species of tick, but no need to worry about that at this time. Since you have given Nexgard (which should kill ticks), then there are two things that could have happened. 1). The ticks were dead when you removed them. If they were not wiggling around and came out easily, then they were dead. 2) The Nexgard didn't work. It happens sometimes that the product (for some reason) didn't work. In that case you can just try a different product that is labeled for ticks. Sorry, I can't recommend any single product. There are so many and none that I know to be better than the other. If you try a new product, then just make sure it is only applied after the Nexgard is next due. I hope that helps.

Those are ticks. You can purchase a tick preventative at a veterinary clinic. If your dog has a lot of ticks, that can make him anemic (ticks suck blood from dogs and that is why they are attached to the skin). Dogs can also become sick with “tick fever” from ticks. This can include lymes dz, ehrlichia, and anaplasmosis. Anemia and tick fever can make your dog lethargic. A veterinarian can examine him and run some bloodwork to see if he has anemia or tick fever. Also, if he is covered in ticks, a dip will help get rid of them. I recommend you take him to see a vet as soon as possible to get rid of the ticks and have him examined.
