Are tick collars toxic if my dogs lick or chew them during play?

She should not experience any adverse side effects. I do tend to find that the flea / tick collars are not as effective as the oral preventative medications such as Bravecto. I am not sure exactly what your question is. If the symptoms resolved with you removing the collar then I suggest you not use it anymore and use a different type of tick control like a topical or oral product. I suggest you consult with your vet as to what would be the best product to use for him in your area.

In general, we do not want dogs to lick the ingredients in the topical flea products. Therefore, most products will contain a "bittering agent" which makes the liquid taste bad, so the dogs will not lick it. If they lick a small amount, they may drool a little due to the bad taste, but they will not lick enough to cause a problem. Nexgard and Bravecto have oral chews that dogs can eat as treats. Nexgard is monthly whereas Bravecto is every 3 months. Both of these prevent against fleas and ticks. Heartgard is an oral medication that protects against heartworm and other intestinal parasites. There is a Seresto collar that can be worm by dogs to prevent flea and tick infections for up to 8 months. I recommend reaching out to your local vet to see which products they have available. Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking. Some of these products can cause GI upset, excess drooling or irritation around the mounting if licked or ingested. These products typically dry in several hours. Apply it before bedtime, place the e-collar and by morning, she should be fine. As an alternative, there are oral flea and tick preventatives that can be used instead of topicals. Discuss options with your veterinarian.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can't combine the other orals with the one you gave. Personally I would just wait the 2 weeks. You can use the Seresto collar but that lasts for 8 months so I see not point then of using a new product. All the topical medications last 1 month. It would just save you money to wait and check him over well for ticks. I like Nexgard, Bravecto or Simparica for the oral flea and tick and the Seresto collar. I wish you the best!

Hi there! I like the Seresto collar for this purpose - it lasts 6-8 months depending on your dog's lifestyle (how often he goes swimming, etc.), and is effective against fleas and ticks. There is no problem using it in combination with monthly Trifexis.
