My dog licked flea and tick topical. Will they get sick? How long?

No. Unfortunately the topical product will get on their hair. It’s almost impossible to prevent this. It is best to prevent them from licking it but it shouldn’t hurt them. I would just watch them for any abnormal behaviors. If that product doesn’t seem to be helping much I would consider an oral flea preventative next time. These sometimes work better due to a faster kill time. I hope this helps!

In general, we do not want dogs to lick the ingredients in the topical flea products. Therefore, most products will contain a "bittering agent" which makes the liquid taste bad, so the dogs will not lick it. If they lick a small amount, they may drool a little due to the bad taste, but they will not lick enough to cause a problem. Most reactions from that medicine include drooling, shaking, tremors and seizures. If none of these are noted and she is walking and eating fine then you probably do not have anything to worry about. You can monitor for signs over the next 24 hours. In cases of reactions the best thing to do is bath the medicine off

Hello, thank you for your question. I believe that keeping a close eye on your cat and trying to prevent her from licking the product is a good option. Most of these products cause mild GI upset or excessive salivation when they are ingested, but rarely life threatening signs. I would recommend staying away from collars if they are playing a lot and they play rough. My concern is that the collars get caught while they are playing. There are great topical and oral medications that can be given and these can be given monthly or certain ones can be given once every 3 months. You part the hair between the shoulder blades and squeeze the content of the little tube onto the skin that is showing. Do not rub it in. If you put it into the proper place Lassie will not be able to reach it and lick the area. Should she be a contortion artist and reach the area anyway, you can put a t-shirt on her for a few hours to keep her from licking. It will not make them sick if they get some of the medication in their mouth, but we want it to work in the skin and not in the gut.
