My dog has circular spots after ticks. Could it be a bullseye?

Hello and thank you for your question. From the pictiures and your description of the lesion, I am more concerned for ringworm. Ringworm is a skin parasite that is transferable between animals and people and usually manifests as a distinct ‘target’ or ‘bullseye’ skin lesion. To address your concern for Lyme disease (a tick borne blood disease), in dogs, the signs typically include lethargy and lameness. There may be an associated skin lesion due to a tick bite, however that lesion with out the tick usually goes undetected. Lyme disease can easily be detected by a simple blood test preformed by your veterinarian. While not an emergency, Lewis should definitely see his veterinarian as soon as possible for diagnostics and treatment. Until Lewis can be seen by his veterinarian, I strongly advise that you or anyone else in the house hold not touch the lesion and continue to exercise proper hygiene. If you or anyone in the household has a similar lesion, they should be seen by their physician. Hopefully this information helps. Best of luck!

Hi there. Monitor Hogan for any signs of illness over the next month. Generally, tick-borne diseases cause non-specific signs such as fever, decreased appetite, swollen lymph nodes, and lethargy within the first 4 weeks after a tick bite. Dogs can get a skin infection or irritation from a tick bite - it is hard to tell exactly what they look like without a photo - but if you are concerned have your veterinarian take a look. And if you notice that he is not feeling well, take him to a vet right away. In the future definitely plan to use a veterinarian-approved tick product and check Hogan for ticks every time he comes inside.

A skin lesion like you are describing can have multiple causes, such as a tick (or other insect) bite, or a fungal or bacterial infection, among others. If it does not resolve in 24-48 hours, spreads, worsens, she starts acting ill or you are worried, I would have it checked by your regular veterinarian to see what may be going on, and if any treatment is needed. Skin lesions like Coco has can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, an insect bite like you mentioned, or a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have Coco seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the lesion you’ve noticed and to make sure it is treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In the meantime, you can bathe Coco in hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs to clean the area, but this will likely not resolve the lesion.I recommend getting Coco on parasite prevention year round. Poor Kato! I hope this bite is not bothering him too much. It looks like what we see with black fly bites. Whilst humans can get the 'bullseye' lesion with a tick bite that is not usually something we see with dogs. I would monitor the area for any worsening of the symptoms. You could apply a cool compress if it seems inflamed or itchy. Take Kato to see your regular veterinarian if other lesions develop or he seems to feel unwell.

Keep the area clean and dry. You can use a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution to clean the area daily. Tick bites frequently result in a red, raised area (tick bite granuloma) after the tick drops off or is removed. The good news is that they resolve on their own within a few weeks. Resume Iggy's tick prevention and perform tick checks after being outdoors. Themise kesion are very suspicious of where a ticj may have been attached due to the inflammation and swelling and the target lesions. Lyme disease is transmitted by 1 type of Tick but there are other Tick disease caused by different types id ticks. With that degree of inflammation I would have your vet check those area and do lab work. It will check for Tick borne diseases and check for any changes in the blood from the illness if positive.
