My chihuahua has a red ring bite. Is it a tick or a fly bite?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 3.4 lbs

I just discovered this bite on my 3 lb chihuahua at the base of his penis. It happened today. We are at our cottage (in the georgian bay area of ontario ) but the dog only walks on the mowed lawn or near the shore line. He does not go into wooded areas, he is simply too small. We have black flies, deer flies, right now, and in 10 years of living here never had a dog with a tick bite. Is this the first and should I be taking him to our vets? The red ring is concerning me. Thank you.

Poor Kato! I hope this bite is not bothering him too much. It looks like what we see with black fly bites. Whilst humans can get the 'bullseye' lesion with a tick bite that is not usually something we see with dogs.
I would monitor the area for any worsening of the symptoms. You could apply a cool compress if it seems inflamed or itchy. Take Kato to see your regular veterinarian if other lesions develop or he seems to feel unwell.
