Dog on thyroid medication peeing more than usual. Is it normal?

Hypothyroidism can lead to drinking and peeing more frequently, as well as a higher likelihood to have a urinary tract infection, and can also lead to neurological disorders. Likely the peeing inappropriately and peeing when nothing is coming out is a problem associated with her hypothyroidism and not associated with having her anal glands expressed. Anal glands and the bladder are not anatomically related, and these would not be associated with one another. I do recommend you bring her in to have her urine checked though. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would have his thyroid rechecked soon. Schedule an appointment to have his T4 rechecked 4-6 hours after the pill is given. The dose may be too high causing hyperthyroid signs. Signs of too much thyroid hormone is increased thirst, urination, hunger, increased activity, weight loss. I wish you both the best!

Yes, a single thyroid test can be very difficult to interpret and T4 levels are generally reduced if unwell from any cause. A repeat sample in one month would be recommended to investigate and comparison with TSH level is important at the same time

I recommend to have Tommy’s thyroid level rechecked. These are not normal signs from the medication and could inidicate that the thyroid level is now too high or it could be unrelated. That’s why you need to know what his levels are while on the medication. Have the blood sample drawn 4-6 hours after he takes the medication. We are not in a position to prescribe medication for your pet. The results you show here are not showing enough proof for the need for thyroid medications unless she is showing very clear symptoms in which case a free t4 ft4 test should be completed. I recommend repeating in 4-6weeks to track changes. I would be more concerned about her elevated bun and creatinine which may indicate kidney disease and should be investigated with urine tests by your vet to determine the concentrating ability of the kidneys

Hornets syndrome can resolve on its own and the cause is not always identified. However it sounds like an ultrasound should be done next along with a UPC ratio to establish where the protein is coming from and to look inside the kidneys and bladder to check for growths or changes in thre architecture. They can also check for Cushings disease or other endocrine problems. It may be worth consulting with a specialist in your area since more advanced testing is needed
