My dog on thyroid meds: thirsty, hungry, aggressive. Is dose too high?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Puggle | Male | neutered | 8 years old | 45 lbs

My dog has been taking levathyroxine for about a month now and I noticed hes been drinking a lot more water and always wanting to eat. His level of energy has increased but I am bit worried that the dosage may be interfering with his hormones. He seems to be more aggressive and barks a lot more when I eat or someone else eats. Should I be worried?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

I would have his thyroid rechecked soon. Schedule an appointment to have his T4 rechecked 4-6 hours after the pill is given. The dose may be too high causing hyperthyroid signs. Signs of too much thyroid hormone is increased thirst, urination, hunger, increased activity, weight loss.

I wish you both the best!
