My dog has a UTI and low thyroid. Could the UTI cause the low thyroid?

Yes, some active disease processes can skew some of these results. We should never diagnose a dog as hypothyroid if there is another concurrent issue being treated. You can add an egg or two to Duke's normal dog food every day, but I wouldn't start adding a bunch of other things until we know if the anemia resolves itself.

However, when a dog develops one autoimmune disease, they can be more prone to developing another. Hypothyroidism cannot be diagnosed off of one low thyroid value though as this is not accurate. The thyroid levels can be artificially suppressed by stress or concurrent disease. Levels of thyroid stimulating hormone and free T4 by dialysis need to be evaluated in conjunction with thyroid hormone levels to make a diagnosis. I hope this information helps!

Hornets syndrome can resolve on its own and the cause is not always identified. However it sounds like an ultrasound should be done next along with a UPC ratio to establish where the protein is coming from and to look inside the kidneys and bladder to check for growths or changes in thre architecture. They can also check for Cushings disease or other endocrine problems. It may be worth consulting with a specialist in your area since more advanced testing is needed

Cushings can be a very difficult condition to manage and can in itself give low thyroid readings (as can any illness such as urinary tract infections common in cushings patients). This syndrome is known as euthyroid sick syndrome where although the thyroid my be capable of working it is not as active as expected - this occurs in almost 50% of cushings patients. True failure of the thyroid gland is also possible but much more rare. Extensive testing may be required in order to differentiate the two conditions but if confirmed, thyroid medication can be given alongside cushings medication

Interpretation of thyroid test results should always be made with the whole picture in mind - this means taking into account whether Ollie has any symptoms of hypothyroidism, and also keeping in mind his other health issues which can sometimes affect thyroid results. Cushing's disease, along with other chronic health issues, can often cause artificially low results on a TT4 screening test, which is the thyroid test that most veterinarians do in-clinic. So for me personally, in this situation, I would make the decision about whether to recommend medication based on whether Ollie is showing any signs of a thyroid problem. Symptoms of hypothyroidism may include decreased appetite, weight gain, skin issues or poor haircoat, and decreased energy levels. If he's not showing any of these signs, it would be reasonable to decide not to start any treatment at this time. If you want to get a better idea of whether Ollie is truly hypothyroid, your vet can send a blood sample to a reference lab for a full thyroid panel - this can often help sort out whether there is an actual problem or not, in cases where it isn't clear.

I would be more concerned about her elevated bun and creatinine which may indicate kidney disease and should be investigated with urine tests by your vet to determine the concentrating ability of the kidneys
