My dog is throwing up. Is Pepto-Bismol safe to give before the vet?

I don't recommend Pepto. It doesn't work well for nausea in dogs and it contains a substance similar to aspirin, which isn't safe in some pets. If the vomiting continues throughout the day, I would recommend that Cassie get checked out by the vet tomorrow.

If the diarrhea doesn’t improve within a few days or if any other symptoms emerge then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. I would restrict food for 12 hours, then start him on small amounts of boiled chicken and rice. You can give a dose of pepto bismol. There is a section on this website with the dose of common over the counter medications you can give your dog. Poor guy. I would suggest having your vet do baseline bloodwork first to rule out underlying conditions that can cause repeated episodes of vomiting such as pancreatitis, kidney or liver disease first. Then once those are ruled out I would inquire with your vet about giving him Pepto Bismol for a short trial period to see if this helps with his assumed upset stomach issue. Hi and thank you for using PetCoach. If your puppies are having mild diarrhea that has not lasted over 6 hours, eating fine and acting normally with no vomiting, then it can be safe. However, it is just a band aid and does not fix the underlying problem as to WHY they are having diarrhea. If the diarrhea has persisted longer than a few hours, the puppies are not eating, they are vomiting or lethargic, I would not give Pepto Bismol. If you are sure it is her teeth, have her examined by your veterinarian. Periodontal disease can lead to systemic disease, bad breath or tooth loss if left untreated. If she has any degree of periodontal disease, she will require anesthesia for a dental cleaning and any periodontal treatment. Your vet should perform a complete exam and blood work to confirm your dog is a good anesthetic candidate. Periodontal disease typically does not present as you describe so a visit to your vet is highly recommended. The GI upset can be managed by withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to the regular diet. If not, see your veterinarian.

I don’t recommend pepto in dogs. It doesn’t seem to do much and some dogs are sensitive to the aspirin component. You can do boiled chicken and cooked white rice, toast without butter, apple sauce, and other bland white human foods. If he isn’t back to normal in a day or two, it would be best to have him checked out by a vet.
