My Golden Lab puppy keeps throwing up bile after vet visit. What now?

Buck could have a parasite or infection causing the vomiting and diarrhea. Your vet can test a stool sample and prescribe medications to treat. He may need a dewormer, antibiotic, anti-vomiting, and/or other medications to help treat. You can also feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice and add a probiotic to see if that helps.

Vomiting can be observed with gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, food sensitivity, foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. Poor Gulliver! He could have an upset stomach from too many treats. If he is otherwise acting fine, you could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice and see how he does with that. If the vomiting continues or he becomes lethargic then he needs to be seen by your vet for treatment. Hope he feels better soon!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Leo. In the bloodwork that he had done, do you know of his cobalamin, folate and pancreatic values were tested? These are important tests with chronic gastrointestinal disease. Cobalamin and folate are vitamins used in digestion. If either are low, they will require supplementation. This can help a lot. Next, has he undergone a strict diet trial with a prescription diet? This will help if he has a food allergy, food intolerance or inflammatory bowel disease. These are a few things I think of when hearing of Leo's problems. I hope this information is a good starting point for you.

If your pet has vomited this much in the past 45 minutes I would be very suspicious of a foreign body or a very intense dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have). I would recommend you start supportive care (like Famotiidne 05-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs and a bland diet like Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food OR boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. However there is a big possibility that this could have been a toxicity and if any more symptoms start to arise (such as ataxia (staggering) or shaking, crying out) then I highly recommend you seek a personal veterinarian for a physical examination and further diagnostics. - Dr. H

The bilirubin is a bit high, as is the ALP (alkaline phosphatase) but neither of these values is super specific in terms of what the cause or the best treatment is. We can see the ALP be elevated with stress, age, and sometimes even normal cell regeneration within the liver. The bilirubin can be slightly elevated when the blood sample is what we call "hemolyzed," which can sometimes happen when blood is spun down for a blood test to be run. Therefore, if he is still showing symptoms of illness, I would echo what Dr Ana said; it may be time to consider imaging. Either X-rays or an abdominal ultrasound maybe helpful in identifying the problem and therefore identifying the best way to treat it. Take him back to the vet if he's still having troubles, as he probably is in need of some more fluids as well.
