Is Pepto Bismol safe for my dachshund who's throwing up hairballs?

This is a great question! Pre-operative blood work can be helpful even for procedures that really need to be done, because it allows your veterinarian to adjust their anesthetic plan if needed - for a kidney or liver problem, for example, that might show up on lab work. Some dogs may need reduced doses of certain drugs, or may have health issues that would require IV fluids for an extended period of time prior the procedure. Pepto-Bismol is generally safe for dogs and should not cause any harm, but it may not help much - in my experience, it isn't usually very effective for vomiting in dogs. You can try withholding food for the next 12 hours to give her stomach a chance to settle, then feed a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice until you are able to see the vet. Licking excessively can be caused by itching or pain. If this is a new behavior, I would recommend that you have Cassie examined by a vet to see what could be going on. Hairballs aren't common in dogs, but are possible for long-haired dachshunds. The best preventative for this type of issue is keeping the hair brushed and free of loose hairs or clipping it shorter.

I would restrict food for 12 hours, then start him on small amounts of boiled chicken and rice. You can give a dose of pepto bismol. There is a section on this website with the dose of common over the counter medications you can give your dog. Not eating and vomiting can be due to a very upset stomach/gastritis, pancreatitis, severe diabetic crisis, blockages of the gut, organ disease, etc. It is important to stop the vomiting and rule out surgical causes and organ failure causes. I recommend you have Peanut to the vet right away, they will likely recommend bloodwork and x-rays. Best of luck with Peanut!

Hi and thank you for using PetCoach. If your puppies are having mild diarrhea that has not lasted over 6 hours, eating fine and acting normally with no vomiting, then it can be safe. However, it is just a band aid and does not fix the underlying problem as to WHY they are having diarrhea. If the diarrhea has persisted longer than a few hours, the puppies are not eating, they are vomiting or lethargic, I would not give Pepto Bismol. I do not recommend giving Benji Pepto Bismol, as it can lead to toxicity. Take a fecal sample from him in with you in case the vet wants to run tests on it.

I would not recommend Pepto bishop for diarrhea, as the ingredients are often not well tolerated in dogs. You can feed some canned pumpkin or boiled chicken and rice to see if that helps but if it's not improving she may need to see your vet for treatment.
