My dog threw up a worm. Does dewormer kill them or prevent new ones?

Roundworms and stomach worms are possible and can cause a significant amount of damage if left untreated. Additionally, roundworms are zoonotic meaning people can contract them through infestation with their larvae, necessitating treatment. As long as she isn't acting sick, just make an appointment to have her examined by a veterinarian within a few days and a fecal examination performed to determine what kind of worms they are and what the best medication is to treat Diamond for them. It was likely a roundworm. It can be gross seeing these come up in the vomitus. You can give her one of two dewormers, found at your local pet or feed store: Pyrantel Palmoate or Fenbendazole. The dosage should be written right on the label; however they may be in generic form so just look for those active ingredients and you have found what she needs. YOu also want to treat her again in 2 weeks, because that is the life cycle of the worm. I would consider keeping Ace on a monthly heartworm prevention from here moving forward, because they all (except for Proheart) contain intestinal dewormer as well. I would recommend letting your veterinarian know that Bernie vomited a roundworm. It is very common for puppies to have roundworms and the dewormer is most likely killing them off. I would recommend depending on what type of dewormer to deworm again in 2 weeks or change the dewormer. Sometimes it takes a second round of deworming puppies. If your dog vomited more than an hour after the medication was given it is probably OK and in his system. However, if the dog vomited before an hour had passed then you will need to redose your dog with another round of dewormer. This medication is very safe and redosing should not cause a problem. It is difficult to tell from your description what this may be. It could be something Roxy ingested and threw back up. If she is on monthly parasite prevention then she may be protected against most intestinal parasites. If not it could be a number of things and not all dewormers are effective on all parasites. I would recommend having an intestinal parasite test or fecal done on a stool sample by her vet. This can indicate what types, if any parasites she may have. Thank you for the picture, it's very helpful. That looks like a roundworm. Jessie needs a deworming treatment, I recommend Drontal or Panacur. Give her a dose of Drontal or Panacur now, then another in two weeks. After that, she should get the medication once a month to prevent further issues with worms. I hope this helps!

No, it's not necessary for a dog to vomit or have diarrhea after being dewormed. It's a side effect but it doesn't happen to all dogs. A lot of times, the only sign of worms in dogs is eggs in the poop, which are microscopic. It will still be working even if you don't see worms in Ember's poop.
