My dog's third eyelid shows after acepromazine. Will it go away?

Depending on what drugs were used to sedated her, this can certainly be normal - many sedatives, acepromazine in particular, very commonly cause third eyelid elevation. If this is the case, it's not a cause for concern, and I would expect her eyes to be back to normal in the next 12-24 hours. If they're still not normal by this time tomorrow, or if she develops any other symptoms you're concerned about, I would suggest giving her vet a call or taking her back in for a recheck to make sure everything is okay.

If you are talking about the pink triangle tissue in the middle corners, this is her 3rd eyelid. They aren't suppose to be showing but will sometimes come up when the eyes are irritated or their is an allergic reaction. I would start giving her benadryl twice a day. I would also have her eyes recheck if it isn't starting to improve. I can't tell for sure in the 2nd picture but it does look like the pupils may be different sizes. That is Ace's third eye lid. When one is elevated, it can indicate an eye infection but it could also just be irritation. I recommend to have Ace examined by the veterinarian to have his eye examined but also to start his basic care. Congratulations on adding him to your family. I hope this helps.

What you are seeing on Jax is his third eyelid (known as the nicitating membrane) sticking out over the rest of his eyeball. I can not say for sure why it has prolapsed. This can happen due to an injury or an infectious process. The nicitating membrane has several important responsibilities, so making sure that it is still fully functional is important. While it is not an emergency, if the membrane does not return to its normal location by tomorrow I would consider bringing Jax in for an appointment. In the mean time, I would recommend obtaining some artificial tears from the drug store and keeping the eye nice and lubricated. Do this every 4 to 6 hours in case there is a lack of tear production.

Hello. It is unlikely that this dose will be fatal, but this is an indication that she cannot tolerate this medication. Sedatives can be very unpredictable in dogs, so much care & thought must be given before administering them. If you can get her to the vet, that would be best. To avoid being bitten, ask to borrow a muzzle from your vet, or go ahead & purchase one. If you cannot do this, then you will just have to let the ace wear off, which can take 24 hours. Just make sure she is not lying in the damp or in bad weather. If you need to get her to the vet, next time you might talk about using something like Trazodone to calm her anxieties, or just a tiny dose of the ace. Not to worry! 35mg of acepromazine is still within a normal dosage range for a dog Botticelli's size. She may be extra groggy and have a longer nap than usual, but there should be no other detrimental effects. :-)

This looks normal to me. When dogs are tired or drifting off to sleep its common to see the third eyelid. When he is sitting up and awake, the normal appearance confirms this is normal. It is not cherry eye. Is he having any discharge from his eyes? If so, he may have an infection or some allergies that are making it more prominent. If he is having discharge from his eyes or they seem to be bothering him, take him in to your vet. Otherwise, there isn't cause for concern.
