My dog ate more acepromazine than prescribed. Is she okay?

Hello. It is unlikely that this dose will be fatal, but this is an indication that she cannot tolerate this medication. Sedatives can be very unpredictable in dogs, so much care & thought must be given before administering them. If you can get her to the vet, that would be best. To avoid being bitten, ask to borrow a muzzle from your vet, or go ahead & purchase one. If you cannot do this, then you will just have to let the ace wear off, which can take 24 hours. Just make sure she is not lying in the damp or in bad weather. If you need to get her to the vet, next time you might talk about using something like Trazodone to calm her anxieties, or just a tiny dose of the ace. Unfortunately Acepromazine does not take away fear and anxiety. It just sedates the dog, he will appear quieter, but inside, she is just as anxious, just cannot express it. There is a much better medication for that and it is called Sileo. Your veterinarian can provide you with that and give you the proper dosage for Bella. We are not in a position legally to give out dosages. In order to do legally so we would have to have a patient-veterinarian-owner relationship with you. Your veterinarian also knows your dog and the potential risks for your dog receiving acepromazine.

The dosage for a dog her size is 10mg, so she ingested two times this amount. however studies have shown no serious adverse effect with double that dose so i believe she will be fine. symptoms you should expect: vomiting, lethargy and diarrhea.

This drug can be safe for use in dogs if doses properly. Unfortunately your dog received a large dose and may suffer some side effect such as vomiting, diarrhea, sedation, agitation, hyperactivity, hyperthermia, disorientation, anxiety, aggression, ataxia, respiratory depression, coma, and seizures. I would watch Bella very closely today. If she begins to exhibit any of the above mentioned symptoms you will need to take her to the vet for supportive care. Oh my goodness, I hope at 5 months old Zia is not already 100 pounds! That would very overweight even for a Mastiff. Abilify can cause low blood pressure, sleepiness, and depression or lethargy - but it has not been shown to be a highly toxic drug, thankfully. If the ingestion occurred right now you can try to induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide. The dose is 1cc per pound of body weight. If the ingestion happened several hours ago, there is likely to be no benefit in inducing vomiting - rather, a veterinarian would only be able to manage any symptoms that were noted. If all seems normal, there may not be any immediate concern - but if you are seeing sleepiness, lethargy, depression, or pale gums, you need to seek veterinary attention immediately.

I can see that this medication comes in various formulation, the highest dosage one is 10 mg. 1.1 mg/kg is safe for dogs, meaning the amount she ingested is not enough to cause her any toxic effect, she should be fine.
