My dog has thin, thread-like worms. What are they and what to do?

If they look like grains of rice it could be tapeworms which can be contracted from fleas. It could also be he is gotten reinfected if the eggs of the previous worms are in his environment such as in the backyard. There are over-the-counter flea medications that will take care of various intestinal parasites including tapeworms. However he should also be on a routine flea preventative to prevent re-infections.

"Ringworm" is actually a term for a fungal skin infection, so I'm assuming you mean that you're seeing roundworms - these look like long, thin spaghetti noodles. You can get an over-the-counter broad spectrum dewormer like Strongid or Panacur from most pet stores to get rid of them, if you wish - just follow the instructions on the label for dosing, based on their weight. Or if you prefer, take a fecal sample to your vet's office to be checked. They can tell you for sure if you're seeing roundworms or some other type of parasite, and will prescribe an appropriate dewormer to treat your pups depending on what is found.

It would be worthwhile taking a sample to your vets office to confirm exactly what species they are but if long and thin they are likely to be a roundworm species and not tapeworm (flat segments and often moving). There are many types of roundworm and your vets should be able to help you identify what you have so you can both treat and try and reduce re-occurrence

Those look like they are probably roundworms. She would have gotten them from coming into contact with infective eggs in the soil most likely. (From where another dog pooped and that poop contained roundworm eggs, then your dog was nosing around near where that was (even if there was no obvious poop on the ground, the eggs will stay in the soil). It is not a result of the food. You can get effective roundworm treatment over the counter. Look for a pyrantel product and follow the label instructions. Feed stores will generally carry it. Long, stringy worms in the stool are usually roundworms. Unless you have dewormed Ra'ra since you saw the worms, then yes - I'm afraid she still has them, even if you aren't actually seeing adult worms in the stool. I would recommend deworming her with a good broad-spectrum dewormer to get rid of the worms - you can get one from your vet, or purchase an over-the-counter product like Panacur. Just make sure to follow the instructions on the package for her body weight.

It sounds like it was a tapeworm. They are flat and segmented. The length depends on the segments that come out--they are offered compared to pieces of rice when individual. These worms are transmitted by the ingestion of a flea which can lead to a dull hair coat and dandruff also. It generally does not affect the appetite and cause that mucous and blood in the stool as noted in your pictures. I would be worried there is an infection of some sort and these worms are a secondary finding. You can find tapeworms medicines at the vets office or any pet store, but if the stool continues I would see a vet for further testing
