How does pet teeth cleaning work, its cost, and blood test costs?

A basic cleaning may cost as much as $500. Costs will vary depending on several factors including location, clinic, severity of dental disease, size of the patient and whether or not dental x-rays and extractions are required. Your veterinarian can perform the procedure. You can contact the clinic and request an estimate for services. Most will provide one as a matter of hospital policy.

For a 9 year old dog (as noted in her profile), I would personally recommend bloodwork before putting her under anesthesia to make sure that her kidneys and liver are working properly. Usually a dental cleaning only takes about 15-20 minutes if no extractions are needed. Best of luck!

The scaling and polishing portion of the dental is the least time consuming, and most inexpensive portion of the $1000 estimate. In addition, tartar left on teeth can further aggravate gum disease. The necessary extractions cannot be done without anesthesia or pre-anesthetic bloodwork to make sure that Baxter’s liver/kidney function appears normal enough to handle anesthesia. With severe gum recession/fractured teeth, cats can develop serious tooth root abscesses and oral pain resulting in weight loss, poor health. If there are in fact diseased teeth in Baxter’s mouth, having a complete dental scaling/polishing with necessary extractions will likely significantly improve his quality of life and decrease the chances of oral bacteria causing heart valve issues in the future. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would need to know a bit more information to really help: did that price include blood work, X-rays of the teeth and extractions? Extracting teeth is a big deal the requires gingival flaps and drilling. It isn't easy and takes a lot of time and patience. I have worked at 3 hospitals, 2 of the 3 a bill of $787 was average to low. The current place I work at doesn't charge enough in my opinion for how time consuming and hard extracting teeth are. We never go over $500 (without blood work and NO X-ray). Blood work is extra $77-$150 based on the pets age. Above prices are in US. I think that your Vet is charging appropriately. If Spots also has a murmur, he'll likely need additional bloodwork or evaluation to determine if it is safe for him to go under anesthesia at all. Other costs will include dental X-rays to check for teeth that need to be pulled, cleaning costs, medications such as pain meds, etc for post-surgery, and the cost to remove any affected teeth. Talking with your current vet is best as they can provide a detailed estimate of costs.

The cost of a dental exam, cleaning and surgical extraction varies greatly depending on your area. I would recommend making an appointment to see a vet for an exam - they can then make an estimate based on whether or not extracting teeth is expected.

It really depends on the exact blood work that is being done. If it is just a routine CBC and Chemistry profile then he probably doesn't need to be fasted. If the blood-work is being done the same day as the procedure then he should be fasted because of the procedure. You should probably call your vet for specific instructions. I am sure it is worrisome to put your dog under anesthesia but the benefits of cleaning the teeth and extracting the diseased teeth outweighs the risks of the anesthesia. As long as he is healthy, the risk is minimal.
