Dog dental cleaning: Is new bloodwork needed? How long does it take?

Most of the problems or deaths under anesthesia are unpredictable and can happen to any age. Doing blood work and checking for any underlying issues like a heart murmur before surgery is great. Anesthesia is monitored closely by the veterinary nurses: blood pressure, oxygen levels, EKG, animals are intubated and are on oxygen and on IV fluids. There are health risks to leaving diseased teeth in the mouth as well. Overall if Angel is a healthy senior I think she will do fine! Good luck!

Age is less important than overall physical health. If her pre anesthesia bloodwork comes back normal and her physical examination is normal before her procedures, the risk of anesthesia complications are low. Of course no anesthesia is without risk, but in an otherwise healthy dog the risk is pretty low. Now I don't know what type of dental procedure she will end up needing. If it's just a cleaning it should be relatively quick, and a spay in a dog Aubree's size is generally a 30 minute procedure so hopefully she won't be under anesthesia for more than, maybe two hours. That is generally an acceptable anesthesia time for a healthy dog. Now if she needs a lot of dental extractions your vet may talk about doing them at a different time since she will be under for the spay tomorrow as well. I would recommend having Precious’ teeth cleaned sooner rather than later. They longer you wait the more you risk having newer problems develop. Your veterinarian will be able to create an anesthetic protocol that is most safe for Precious. Her quality of REM sleep should not in any way affect her general anesthesia. The length of anesthesia depends on if issues are found during the procedure. If extractions are needed this will obviously prolong the procedure. A normal cleaning usually takes about 30-45 minutes. It really depends on the exact blood work that is being done. If it is just a routine CBC and Chemistry profile then he probably doesn't need to be fasted. If the blood-work is being done the same day as the procedure then he should be fasted because of the procedure. You should probably call your vet for specific instructions. I am sure it is worrisome to put your dog under anesthesia but the benefits of cleaning the teeth and extracting the diseased teeth outweighs the risks of the anesthesia. As long as he is healthy, the risk is minimal.

This depends in part on the dental issues your pet it suffering from but generally involves an anesthetic, full assessment of the teeth and gums followed by removal of all plaque and tartar from the tooth surface. Loose or damaged teeth may be extracted to prevent further pain, discomfort and infection. Costs depend entirely on the extent of work required; the costs for blood tests also are dependent on what is being tested for. Dental cleanings are very important as bacteria in the mouth can lead to many other problems in the body. At 12 years of age, Burt is not too old to have a dental cleaning and being a Dachshund, I would certainly recommend having his teeth cleaned before there are any problems. If you keep up with preventative cleanings, Burt will be under anesthesia less time since there will be less tartar buildup. If you wait and do not have any cleanings done, the dental disease worsens and he may require more extractions leading to more time under anesthesia. It is more beneficial and safer to have him in for multiple preventative dental cleanings to avoid being under anesthesia for long periods of time. My dachshund, when he was still alive, had dental cleanings up until he was 17 years old. He lived to be 20 years old but he was on oral antibiotics for dental disease for the last 3 years and was unable to undergo dental cleanings due to other diseases he was dealing with. The answer to the frequency of recommended dental cleaning really depends on the dog. Most dogs would probably do best having their teeth cleaned every 6 months the way we do, but that often is not practical. Some dogs develop dental disease very quickly and need their teeth cleaned at least once a year while other dogs do very well not having their teeth cleaned for years. So, I would recommend following your veterinarian's recommendations for frequency of dental cleanings based on how quickly Otis develops dental disease. The anesthetic techniques and monitoring that we use now are very safe, so that is not a concern. It is much more likely that dental disease will cause more health problems. And there isn't any age limit as long as the dog is healthy. I just did a dental cleaning on my 14 year old dog last year. I hope that was helpful and answered your questions.
