My Akita has tear stain in one eye, vet treatments aren't working.

I recommend you get the eye rechecked, possibly for in turned or stray eyelashes which may be causing ongoing irritation. Blocked test ducts can also cause tear overflow. Referral to a specialist ophthalmologist may be worthwhile considering

Dry eye can result in the discharge in the picture you posted and can require more than just Artificial Tears to treat. (That would be more common than an allergy problem especially since only one eye is affected.) This treatment is clearly not effective. That is probably due to the fact that is not the right treatment for this type of dry eye. Dry eye is often an autoimmune disease, that means that requires an immunosuppressive drug (cyclosporine) to treat it. Poor girl. It would help if you posted a picture here, but it does sound like Ayumi has possible conjunctivitis. If the discharge is yellow or green, then there is an infection that should be checked by your vet. The vet needs to do an eye stain to check for any ulcers/scratches on the eye surface, and then prescribe eye ointment/drops to allow this to heal. It is possible that blowing in her face could have inadvertently caused dust or debris to go into her eye and cause irritation or there could be another cause altogether. Eye problems in dogs can't be treated with anything over the counter unfortunately, so its best to get her seen by your vet soon for treatment. He could have an infection, corneal ulcer/scratch, etc. You could rinse his eye with an eye wash or artificial tears and see if that helps. Otherwise, he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He may need an antibiotic or an anti-inflammatory to treat.

Based on the redness, crustiness and loss of pigment on the nose and eyelids, I would worry about him possibly having an auto-immune disease such as lupus or pemphigus. These diseases commonly affect the eyelids and nose in this way. Only a skin biopsy can definitively diagnose these conditions. It is also possible that there is a secondary infection. I would recommend having a skin cytology and a culture and sensitivity done. This means that the vet will take a superficial sample of those areas and look for bacteria. It will then be cultured to see what kind of bacteria is it and the sensitivity shows you what kind of antibiotic it is sensitive to. If there is an infection, it is best to clear that up prior to doing a biopsy as infection can make it hard to see the primary cause. Even though he doesn't seem to be responding to Apoquel, it could still be allergies. Most dogs I have treated with Apoquel have done very well, but there have been some dogs who don't improve in their allergy symptoms. I hope this helps and that he gets better soon!

There are over the counter eye drops that work well in eye allergy cases or a steroid drop from your vet. If they are still watering, I would ask the vet for a steroid eye drop and try this for a month to see if it helps. I hope this helps!
