My dogs had tapeworms. How do I clean my house to prevent reinfection?

This is really not necessary for you to do. The way cats get tapeworms is by eating fleas infected with the tapeworm larvae. They will not get tapeworms by ingesting the segments you see in the feces. So, that being the case, you should be more concerned with treating the environment to get rid of the fleas/flea eggs, etc. and by treating the cat with flea medication (either topical or oral) every month. If you have a yard and cat goes outside you should treat the yard as well. If a cat has tapeworms they definitely have fleas. Disinfecting the house with bleach is not helpful in preventing transmission of tapeworms (you cannot get the either) but if it makes you feel better by cleaning the house with bleach you can certainly do that - I would use a 10:1 dilution of water to bleach (10 parts water to 1 part bleach). Oh no. This is a nuisance to deal with for sure. Tapeworms are contagious to people, but it would require ingesting (eating) a live worm to become infective. As long as you clean up the feces and use good hygiene (washing your hands and avoid putting hands in the mouth after touching your pet or any live worms), then you are less likely to infest yourself. Clean up the poop quickly and don’t let your pet around other dogs or cats to avoid transmission until you can get Coco treated. Best wishes and don’t forget to also get Coco on a good flea preventative (ie Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica, Vectra etc) at your vet to avoid further infection with tapeworms. Take care.

Steam cleaning and shampooing the areas of the carpet that were in contact with any feces will help get rid of any eggs. You should disinfect any hard surfaces with a disinfectant cleaner. You can also disinfect the litter pan and all food/water bowls.

Oh my. Poor Gunner. If these are small like white rice then they are likely tapeworms. Tapeworms are not infective once they are dried up; therefore, you can use normal everyday cleaner to clean the area free of the worms. No special requirements needed, since they are not infected once they are dried up. If you do see a live worm, then wear gloves to remove them from the area, then spray as needed. Good hygiene is the best way to prevent infecting yourself, which requires you actually ingesting a live worm. A tapeworm medication (i.e. Praziquantel, Drontal) should be started right away to rid the worms in Gunner's system. Also a flea preventative (i..e Bravecto, Nexgard, Trifexis-heartworm and flea) is needed to prevent re-infection, since Tapeworms come from ingesting a flea. If the worms are Roundworms, then the same recommendations apply, except Roundworms look like angel hair pasta and don't come from fleas, but instead from the environment and in-utero infection is common. These are treated with a broad spectrum dewormer (i.e. Pyrantel Palmoate or Fenbendazole). I hope you can get Gunner free of his parasites soon and get him on the right track towards healthy living. I would make sure that your cats and your puppy are both up to date on their deworming treatments. If they aren't, you will need to get treatments for them from the vet. As for cleaning the house, I would shampoo the carpets, and scrub any hardwood floors.

You need to treat Bellatrix for fleas because fleas transmit tapeworms. Disinfect your home as well. Wash her bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Tapeworms do not cause discomfort to the cat unless it's a severe infestation, so you don't need to do anything for her. Yes, I would change your sheets. Best of luck.
