My dog's tail is stuck down, won't move, and she's in pain. Why?

Hi my dog wont move her tail. Its stuck in a downward position. It's just hanging and she seems in pain. I tried touching it and she bites and becomes aggresive. not sure whats the cause but she can't move it.

This could indicate a fracture of her tail or dislocation as the tail has joints just like the rest of the body. It could also indicate an anal gland issue or even a problem with the lumbosacral joint. Do not give your dog in a human medication as it could be toxic to dogs. I recommend having your dog seen by her veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian as she may need x-rays to diagnose the problem as well as dog safe medication for pain. keep her quiet and restrict her activity until she can be seen by veterinarian and do not try to manipulate the site at all.

Poor girl. It sounds like she may have either broken it or have a lesion on the spinal cord that innervates the tail, causing pressure and pain. I would start with radiographs of her tail to definitely diagnose the underlying cause and then consider treatment based on what is found. I am sorry your pet is in pain and wish there was more you could do at home, but there are no safe over the counter human pain medications that can be given to pets because they can cause acute liver or kidney failure. So it is best to get your pet in to your local vet soon for a proper exam, testing, and treatment. Best wishes and take care.

Hi there. There is a condition called "limber tail" which can affect dogs. It is actually a problem with the muscles and we do not always know the inciting cause. Usually it is mild, your doctor will prescribe an anti inflammatory most often and improvement is generally seen within a week. Other things like fractures and dislocations require more aggressive treatments. I would not bother it if she is trying to bite you-i don't want you getting hurt because this may hurt her. I suggest taking her in to be seen either way-but do not panic right away until you have a diagnosis. Have her seen as soon as you can and go from there. Hope this helps!

Poor Sunni! She sounds painful! She really needs to see a vet to get the appropriate nsaid pain medication for her size. She may have a sprained tail if it is sore and swollen just at the base of the tail, maybe 2-5 inches from the anus. This is common in large-breed dogs who have a big day of running or swimming (common in hunting labs) and then can't wag or lift their tail the next day. It is usually self-limiting, but extremely painful. Sunni needs some Rimadyl, Deramaxx, Metacam, or other dog-specific anti-inflammatory pain medication as this will make her feel much better much more quickly than time alone. Other pain medications like aspirin can have bad side-effects like stomach ulcers or GI bleeding, and would not recommend these. Maybe your vet has some donated medication or other options if you can scrape together the exam fee and explain your situation. Best of luck!

Why does my dog scream when her tail or hind area is touched?

If this has only been going on for a day or two, 'swimmer's tail' or 'limber tail' is a possibility. This is a swelling of the muscles at the base of the tail that can result in significant pain, and it can seem like the dog is unable to move it's tail. An injury would be less likely with no history of trauma. Spinal/lumbar pain is also possible. Anal gland inflammation could also cause some discomfort although it would be unusual to cause such extreme pain. Unfortunately I think a physical examination by a veterinarian would be necessary to diagnose the problem.

My dog's tail suddenly won't wag. Why is it just hanging limp?

Firstly feel the tail carefully to make sure it is not broken and there are no obvious lacerations or wounds. She may have trapped it in something or simply overused it and hence it could be painful or sprained. She could have been bitten in the tail or have a wound which has got infected, this can damage it. Sometimes dog's tails become fatigued after being in cold water for a long time, it can cause the muscles to seize up. If you find any sign of infection, wounds or possible damage take her to the vet for treatment. Otherwise give her time and it should improve with rest.

I'm sorry to hear that Mayhem hasn't been feeling well. The signs that you describe - reluctance to use stairs, pain on manipulation of the tail, not pooping (likely due to pain while posturing/squatting), lethargy, and a decreased appetite - are all most suspicious for a sign of back pain. This could be a result of a soft tissue injury while playing, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), fibrocartilaginous emboli (FCE), among others. Regardless of the cause, it sounds as though Mayhem is quite painful and would greatly benefit from an urgent trip to the vet for an exam and pain medications. Do not give any pain medications at home (including aspirin), and only give medications prescribed by his vet as most human pain medications are not safe for use in dogs. I hope that he feels better soon!

She could have a tail sprain causing discomfort or skin irritation in that area. An anal gland infection would be another possibility. If she is that painful I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for an exam to determine what’s causing the pain.

It could be Honey hurt her tail or her spine around her hips causing this pain. Do not touch her tail, and do not give her any human pain medications. Many are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. Have her seen by a vet in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing her pain and can treat it. I hope this helps!
