My dog has a painful tail and can't move it. What can I give her?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 2 months old | 60 lbs

Came home last night, my dog was bitting her tail a few times . so we looked at it and she was in pain , she not moved her tail just anough to to pee. Up all night trying to get comfortable. Morning got sleep but still not moveing her tail. What can i give her for pain . i don think its broke. Don't have money for vet.

Poor Sunni! She sounds painful! She really needs to see a vet to get the appropriate nsaid pain medication for her size. She may have a sprained tail if it is sore and swollen just at the base of the tail, maybe 2-5 inches from the anus. This is common in large-breed dogs who have a big day of running or swimming (common in hunting labs) and then can't wag or lift their tail the next day. It is usually self-limiting, but extremely painful. Sunni needs some Rimadyl, Deramaxx, Metacam, or other dog-specific anti-inflammatory pain medication as this will make her feel much better much more quickly than time alone. Other pain medications like aspirin can have bad side-effects like stomach ulcers or GI bleeding, and would not recommend these. Maybe your vet has some donated medication or other options if you can scrape together the exam fee and explain your situation. Best of luck!

Sorry to hear Sunni has been having some discomfort around her tail region. It is hard to say for certain what is causing the pain around her tail without examining her first, but it certainly could be fractured or perhaps sprained. Also, sensitivity around the lower back area including part of the tail could indicate a back issue such as a slipped disc or other spinal or neurological disorder. Unfortunately there is really no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs. You may try applying a heating pad between a towel to the affected area 3-4 times a day but ideally she should see a veterinarian for an exam and an x-ray to help determine the cause. Hello. It's hard to know without seeing the dog but he might have a sprained tail, or "swimmer's tail." This is a common condition in large breed dogs like labs who overexert themselves by running for hours, hunting, or swimming. They overuse the tail and it becomes very swollen at the base, extending 2-5 inches toward the tip. These dogs won't wag or use their tails and are very painful when you touch this area. It usually resolves on its own but I like to prescribe anti-inflammatory pain medication because these dogs are usually really painful. If it isn't much better now, I'd take him to your veterinarian for pain meds!

My dog's tail is limp after playing. Can I give him aspirin?

Aw, poor George! I agree that it sounds pretty likely that he has limp (or limber) tail, particularly based on how he's holding his tail in the pictures. The good news is that this problem resolves on its own with a bit of rest over a week or two. Some dogs are uncomfortable with this issue and benefit from prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications from their veterinarian, but many are ok without these pain relievers. Since George is whining and seems uncomfortable, it would be best to take him to his vet to inquire about these pain medications. Do not give him aspirin. Aspirin can cause both bleeding issues, as well as an increased risk of stomach ulceration. There aren't any safe over the counter pain medications for dogs. Be sure to continue keeping George rested for the next week or two until his tail is back to normal!

Hi, if you think it could be due to muscular pain for example because of intense swimming, you could give her paracetamol at 10 mg/kg, so if Nala weighs 30kg she could have a children 250mg tablet or half of an adult 500mg. It needs to be the plain paracetamol. Be really careful with the dosage as it is toxic at higher dosages. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry to hear that Mayhem hasn't been feeling well. The signs that you describe - reluctance to use stairs, pain on manipulation of the tail, not pooping (likely due to pain while posturing/squatting), lethargy, and a decreased appetite - are all most suspicious for a sign of back pain. This could be a result of a soft tissue injury while playing, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), fibrocartilaginous emboli (FCE), among others. Regardless of the cause, it sounds as though Mayhem is quite painful and would greatly benefit from an urgent trip to the vet for an exam and pain medications. Do not give any pain medications at home (including aspirin), and only give medications prescribed by his vet as most human pain medications are not safe for use in dogs. I hope that he feels better soon!

Why does my dog scream when her tail or hind area is touched?

If this has only been going on for a day or two, 'swimmer's tail' or 'limber tail' is a possibility. This is a swelling of the muscles at the base of the tail that can result in significant pain, and it can seem like the dog is unable to move it's tail. An injury would be less likely with no history of trauma. Spinal/lumbar pain is also possible. Anal gland inflammation could also cause some discomfort although it would be unusual to cause such extreme pain. Unfortunately I think a physical examination by a veterinarian would be necessary to diagnose the problem.

My dog's tail is limp after swimming. How can I ease her pain now?

You need to limit her movement as much as you can, keep her calm in the house, on her bed if possible, the less she moves the less she will feel the pain. if the tail is limp a fracture is one possibility, she might need an xray to rule it out.
