Why does my dog scream when her tail or hind area is touched?

Gabby could have a tail sprain, also known as swimmers tail or limber tail. The muscles at the base of the tail swell and cause significant pain. Limber tail syndrome, or acute caudal myopathy, is a disorder of the muscles in the tail, usually affecting working dogs. This condition is not a disease, but a symptom of overuse of the muscles of the tail which causes inflammation and pain. However, it has to be differentiated from other causes of pain in the tail, such as a fracture, cancer along the vertebra or spine, neurological disorders, metabolic disorders, intoxication, infection, and other disease. Hello. It's hard to know without seeing the dog but he might have a sprained tail, or "swimmer's tail." This is a common condition in large breed dogs like labs who overexert themselves by running for hours, hunting, or swimming. They overuse the tail and it becomes very swollen at the base, extending 2-5 inches toward the tip. These dogs won't wag or use their tails and are very painful when you touch this area. It usually resolves on its own but I like to prescribe anti-inflammatory pain medication because these dogs are usually really painful. If it isn't much better now, I'd take him to your veterinarian for pain meds!

Your dog could have hip or back problems that make it painful to posture to defecate and would also make it hurt when her tail is manipulated. It could also be infected or inflamed anal glands. This condition is very painful and makes it difficult to defecate or even move. Without treatment, the gland may rupture, causing a open wound on your pet's rear that will require wound care and antibiotics as well as some pain relief. I recommend getting your pet seen by your vet. They will examine your pet, possibly do some x-rays and labwork and be able to give you a better idea of what is going on and how best to treat it.

Lola certainly sounds uncomfortable! Discomfort with movement of the tail can have a variety of causes, including spinal/vertebral pain, anal gland problems (impacted, abscessed, or simply full), urinary tract infections, etc. From your description of yelping and panting, it does sound as though Lola is painful. She should see her vet for an exam. Your vet will be able to perform a rectal exam to check her anal glands, neurologic and orthopedic exam to check her back and tail function, and even a urinalysis to check for signs of infection.
