Why is my dog's drained tail cyst still lumpy? Should I be concerned?

The problem with removing a large cyst from that area is that there isn't a lot of excess tissue to stretch and cover the remaining area. The entire cyst has to be removed to prevent reoccurrence, and that would likely include the top layer of skin. The cyst can be drained sterilely, and you can talk to your vet about that option since it is causing Diamond discomfort and problems walking. You can also take her into another vet for a second opinion.

It doesn't cause problems if it stays on the tail unless it becomes quite big and annoys Benji. You may have to keep having it drained, and that's why it's recommended to have it removed surgically should it keep filing up. It saves you from repeated trips to the vet to have it drained :-)

The cyst is likely what we call a fluid filled cyst. It is a benign sac of fluid. The fluid is produced by the cells lining the sac, so even when we drain the fluid, those cells will create more fluid and the cyst will refill. They can grow slowly over time, but generally they will stay fairly small. If Bella is under anesthesia for another reason (such as a dental cleaning), you may discuss having the cyst surgically removed with your veterinarian. Sometimes tumors can become cystic or fluid filled. In some cases we can drain these swellings but oftentimes they will refill. They may take just a day or two to refill, or months, and it is impossible to predict. If your dog is in otherwise good health I would talk to your vet about removing the growth or if they feel uncomfortable doing so, referring you to a veterinary surgeon with more experience removing large growths such as this. They may be willing to drain the swelling at your vet's office, just be warned that it can refill.

They may be able in this case to remove the tissue around it so that it stops bothering him. Another alternative is to treat it medically with antibiotics. Even if it is a cyst, I would still have it removed since it is draining. They typically will continue to drain and be annoying more than anything so it is worth having it removed to not have to worry about any further issues with it

It could be a cyst. called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed.
