My dog has a large tail cyst. Why can't it be removed due to skin?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 92 lbs

Lab has large cyst on back just above her tail. Seems to be getting bigger. Size of soft ball. It's benign. The very said that if they removed it there would not be enough skin to cover wound. Not sure why they can't just cut open and remove the sac and all without cutting it completely off. Please help she seems to be bothered by it and think it's effecting her walking

The problem with removing a large cyst from that area is that there isn't a lot of excess tissue to stretch and cover the remaining area. The entire cyst has to be removed to prevent reoccurrence, and that would likely include the top layer of skin. The cyst can be drained sterilely, and you can talk to your vet about that option since it is causing Diamond discomfort and problems walking. You can also take her into another vet for a second opinion.
