My dog's tail cyst is red, hot, and inflamed. Can I use antibiotics?

Please, here in this forum don’t threaten shooting your dog if we don’t help you. It’s inappropriate. The dose for Amoxicillin is 10-25mg/kg, two to three times per day. You are better off giving him 1,000 mg three times a day if the infection is a bad as you described.

Oh dear, poor Jack! Dog bite wounds can become infected quickly and can cause far more damage under the skin than is visible on the surface. I strongly recommend taking Jack to his vet for evaluation since surgery can be necessary for many bite wounds to assure that the wound is clean, tissue is healthy, and that underlying organs and structures have not been damaged. The vet will also likely prescribe antibiotics (cephalexin, cefpodoxime, amoxicillin-clavulinic acid are typically used in these cases) and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (such as carprofen, deracoxib, or meloxicam) if his liver and kidney blood values are normal. The vet will also likely recommend an e-collar (cone) to prevent Jack from licking or scratching at the wound, unless the collar would directly rub on the wound and cause further irritation. It sounds like this is likely to be a cyst of some kind, but could also be an abscess, localized skin infection or some other type of skin growth - pus from an abscess would usually have an odor to it, but not always. You can clean the area thoroughly with warm water and soap, and it's fine to use topical antibiotic ointment like Neosporin as well. But in order to find out for sure what it is and get it treated more effectively, you will need to take your dog to a vet for an exam. He/she can take a sample of the white substance for analysis to help determine what it is, and will advise you based on the results whether it needs to be treated with oral antibiotics or other medication, or if it needs to be surgically removed.

I believe I already answered this question in regards to everything except for the last portion about aggression towards vet and medication. If aggression towards vets is an issue, I would encourage obtaining a basket muzzle or traditional muzzle and beginning to train Rambo to like to use them. I know that sounds a little crazy, but it is very possible and easy to do. This will be very important when there comes a day that he absolutely has to see one. If training doesn't sound like something you can do, there are medications that can be given prior to arrival at the vet (or at the vet) to help calm Rambo enough for an exam. As far as treatment, amoxicillin is a reasonable choice of antibiotic for many dermatologic conditions, but in many cases will require three times a day dosing at large quantities for such a large dog.

This definitely looks like it can be a cyst. Unfortunately, cysts can be very difficult to treat with antibiotics as the area can always get wet and is in contact with the ground, etc. You can definitely go for a second opinion - another treatment option would be to remove the cyst (this would have to be done under general anesthesia), but may cause PJ even more discomfort. Some vets will recommend a prolonged course of antibiotics as well as topical treatments or Epsom salt soaks. Underlying causes such as a yeast infection or mites living in the hair follicles should be ruled out as well.
