My dog's ears are swollen and red after a flea bath. What to do?

Hello! Luna could have a couple things going on. When dogs have red ears, it could be due to an infection in the ear from bacteria or yeast, or they can have something stuck in their ear like hair or a grass seed. You can try flushing her ear out with a 50:50 mix of white vinegar and water and use a cotton ball to clean the ear once the flush is done. If this presentation is due to a trauma and secondary localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria), a check up, appropriate disinfection and antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Yes I would recommend to have them prescribed by your vet. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. If the ear looks like a small pillow, it could be a hematoma. Blood filling the ear will make it look puffy. The odor can be due to a severe ear infection. Excessive head shaking can cause a hematoma. Treatment is twofold. First, drain the ear or correctly via surgery then treat the underlying ear infection. Daisy will need to be examined by your veterinarian for confirmation and treatment. If it is not a hematoma, your veterinarian should be able to determine what is causing the condition after an exam and diagnostics.

If it is swollen down inside he ear canal, this could be an ear infection. It's hard to tell from the photo but if there is swelling in the ear flap it is likely a hematoma. This is a pocket of blood from a broken blood vessel inside the ear. Usually this is from shaking the head from an ear infection. While this is not an emergency it is very uncomfortable. I would recommend taking Kaiser to a vet soon to get him some relief. If you are noticing a lot of redness in the ears, the most common reason for scratching at them are infections, allergies to food/environment, or parasites like fleas or mites. To determine this, a veterinarian can obtain an ear swab to look for the presence of bacteria, yeast, inflammatory cells, or a mixture of everything. Usually an ear flush that is treated with something antimicrobial and anti inflammatory will help quite a bit. Some of these are over the counter while others are prescription only. You will also have to fit Mushy with an e-collar to prevent further itching during the healing process. He won't like it but it is for his own good! In terms of cleaning the ears, periodically you can use some q tips and an ear flush to wipe out the ears. You don't have to worry about puncturing the dogs ear drums since their ear canal is curved. You would have to be bending the q-tip to cause damage. There are several videos on Youtube on how to clean ears if you need to see someone do it first. Sorry to hear that Chance is so uncomfortable. It is difficult to tell you what to treat the ear with without knowing what is wrong. If you are unable to get a traditional muzzle on him, you might consider getting chance a basket style muzzle. Most dogs tend to like these and tolerate them much better as they are not so constraining. You can also train dogs to enjoy muzzle. Putting them on can be made in to a game. The best way to accomplish this is by first just holding the muzzle while giving your dog treats. Eventually, you want to stick your hand through the muzzle and give him the treats. Slowly, you want to move your hand back out the muzzle getting your dog's head close and closer to inside of it. Eventually, place the treat on top of the muzzle. I am sure you see where I am going with this. It can take some time, but I find this to be the most effective way to get dogs to not mind the muzzle. Back to the ear. I can not tell you for sure whether or not there is a bacterial infection, fungal infection, inflammatory reaction, or some sort of allergic reaction occurring. As a result, you'd have to just throw the whole kitchen sink at it. You would also have to know that by putting a wash or drug inside the ear without a vet looking at it, you will not be sure if the ear drum is in tact.
