Dog's paw still swollen after antibiotics. Should I give more?

This also may still be an infection that did not respond to previous antibiotics. I would recommend discussing this further with the veterinarian as this may need further testing such as a culture to see if there is a resistant bacteria. Poor Kyro! From the pictures, the area still looks a little swollen and you need to keep him from licking it. That will make it worse. Put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking it. You can make one at home (I will put a link below on how to do this), or you can buy one at a pet store. Otherwise, it doesn't look red so I would not clean it unless the vet instructed you to clean it daily. I am so sorry to hear that Google has an infection on his paw. Thank you for providing a picture. It looks like Google is licking or biting the sore area. It is very red and inflamed which is often a sign of tissue trauma cause by the dog itself. I would advise trying these tactics for the next 48 hours; Place an ecollar on Google so he cannot get to the sore paw and damage further Bathe the area with warm water once daily and leave dry and open Place a cool compress on the sore paw twice daily for a few minutes Some owners find that benadryl can help provide relief from itchiness for their dogs, which may help make Google more comfortable https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/ If the paw does does not improve over the next 48 hours I would advise taking Google back to the veterinarian for a course of anti inflammatory medications and potentially antibiotics. Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Poor Archie seems to have a case of pododermatitis, an inflammatory condition sometimes associated with allergies. It may, indeed take a few days for the antibiotics to kick in. Hopefully, he is on an oral antibiotic, but I will also recommend a topical one, as well. This would involve bandaging up the foot so the antibiotic does its job. You can talk to your vet about some pain medication too. In the meantime, soak the foot in warm water & dilute betadine or 2% chlorhexidine. 1/4 cup of the solution in a cup of water should do it. Try to soak the paw for 5-10 minutes 3 times a day, rinse & dry the foot. This will help in the healing process. Hope Archie is doing better soon. Take care.

At. This point, I would surgically explore that lesion. There may be a foreign body in there, there may be a small mass or tumor inside, but at least it should be surgically debrided. Debriding it will remove all of the dead necrotic tissue. It should be kept clean by doing daily bandage changes and your pet likely needs a different antibiotic. If this was a routine infection that was responsive to Cephalexin, it would be better by now.

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear that VooDoo has a bum foot. Irritation and infection from licking can very well cause swelling and irritation like this, and KetoHex alone probably won't be enough to get the swelling down if he's still able to lick it. I highly recommend that you put an e-collar (also known as a cone) on VooDoo so that he can't get to the paw. I know it's rough on them, but they don't know not to lick, and he'll just wind up making his paw worse and worse. That being said, if the swelling doesn't go down after he hasn't been able to lick it for a while, I suggest re-visiting the vet to see if there could be anything stuck in the skin of his paw, like a tiny thorn. I have seen swelling like this caused by a foreign object in the past, and sometimes they can be very hard to see. The vet may also be able to prescribe some anti-inflammatories that will help with the swelling and pain (do not give anything over-the-counter as they could be dangerous to VooDoo). It is also possible that the swelling is being caused by a tumor, but considering VooDoo's age, I highly doubt that this is the case. Good luck, and I hope that VooDoo's foot feels better soon!

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign.
