My dog woke up with a swollen nose. Is it an allergy or injury?

A swollen muzzle is most commonly due to an allergic reaction, often to an insect bite or bee sting. It could also be from an infection near her muzzle. If she's otherwise acting completely normal you can monitor her; an allergic reaction should get gradually better and usually resolves in 24 hours or sooner. An infection would not improve without antibiotics, so if the swelling continues or if any other symptoms appear she should be seen by a vet. Hope this helps!

The concern here is that the swelling is spreading, and it could get big enough to obstruct her breathing. I think it's best to have her seen by a vet now to get this treated. I hope this helps.

This is most likely due to an allergic reaction. On the muzzle this is usually happens with an insect sting, or reaction to a poisonous plant (i.e. poison oak). This is usually temporary, but can lead to a skin infection, so it's good to flush the area with cool water 2-3 times a day. Flush the area using a syringe or other dispensing device with cool water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because dogs tend to hate water getting near their face. I recommend having someone help you with holding Bob to make sure the area gets flushed well. After flushing, you can apply aloe gel to the area to provide more relief. If the swelling is not going down within two days, then I would reccomend taking him to the vet for an evaluation. It may take a week for it to look normal, but it should start to look better within a couple of days. These reactions have the potential to get worse, so if the swelling is increasing, or Bob is having trouble breathing, then be he should go to the vet as soon as possible for treatment. Swelling of the face and mouth/facial swelling are often initial symptoms of an anaphylactic/allergic reaction. These reactions can occur in dogs after vaccines, after exposure to a food or substance they are allergic to, or after a bite from an insect. As it is impossible to predict whether an anaphylactic reaction will remain localized or progress to trouble breathing, which can be life threatening, it is safest to contact a 24 hour vet for Bella at this time to have her seen. The ER may recommend a treatment plan including anti-histamines, corticosteroids +/- epinephrine and montitoring until the selling has gone down. They will also likely recommend an at home dose for Benadryl after establishing a valid patient/client relationship if this should occur again as it is uncertain at this point what Bella is allergic to. It looks like Gunther either got a bump on the nose and that is a bit of a bruise, or more likely was either bitten or stung by an insect. I would recommend monitoring it closely. If you notice the muzzle/around the eyes/jaw/lips/ears starting to swell, or if you notice hives on Gunther, then I would get him to a vet right away for a couple injections to stop the allergic reaction. Otherwise, I would just monitor the bump. If it grows at all, or has any discharge, or doesn't go away in 2 days, then I would have it looked at by a vet. Best of luck with Gunther.

If it is not bothering Peanut at all, just monitor him at home and the swelling should disappear in less than 24hrs. If it becomes itchy and your dog stars to have fast and noisy respiration, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment.
