My dog woke up with a swollen snout. What's causing it and what to do?

Poor Bella! Sometimes swelling in the muzzle can indicate an allergic reaction or you are right that trauma could cause it to swell as well. When pets have allergic reactions, we often never know why but spider bites and other big bites are highly suspected. I recommend to have Bella see her veterinarian today to make sure it’s not an allergic reaction and if it is, the receive treatment. The swelling is most likely an allergic reaction, usually from an insect bite or sting but it could be related to pollen or plant allergy. If it is not bothering Peanut at all, just monitor him at home and the swelling should disappear in less than 24hrs. If it becomes itchy and your dog stars to have fast and noisy respiration, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment.

It looks like Gunther either got a bump on the nose and that is a bit of a bruise, or more likely was either bitten or stung by an insect. I would recommend monitoring it closely. If you notice the muzzle/around the eyes/jaw/lips/ears starting to swell, or if you notice hives on Gunther, then I would get him to a vet right away for a couple injections to stop the allergic reaction. Otherwise, I would just monitor the bump. If it grows at all, or has any discharge, or doesn't go away in 2 days, then I would have it looked at by a vet. Best of luck with Gunther.

Hi there. It may be that she received a bite from an insect or spider and she is having an allergic reaction. Lima may also be having an allergy to something else, but a swollen muzzle is often the first signs. It could also be due to some self trauma to the area from rubbing or licking, but that generally doesn't happen suddenly. I would monitor closely and continue to monitor her breathing like you are. This is most likely due to an allergic reaction. On the muzzle this is usually happens with an insect sting, or reaction to a poisonous plant (i.e. poison oak). This is usually temporary, but can lead to a skin infection, so it's good to flush the area with cool water 2-3 times a day. Flush the area using a syringe or other dispensing device with cool water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because dogs tend to hate water getting near their face. I recommend having someone help you with holding Bob to make sure the area gets flushed well. After flushing, you can apply aloe gel to the area to provide more relief. If the swelling is not going down within two days, then I would reccomend taking him to the vet for an evaluation. It may take a week for it to look normal, but it should start to look better within a couple of days. These reactions have the potential to get worse, so if the swelling is increasing, or Bob is having trouble breathing, then be he should go to the vet as soon as possible for treatment. I see what you mean about the swelling, it is quite pronounced! This could be from a bug bite or it could be an allergic reaction. Oftentimes Benadryl is not strong enough to treat these issues, and stronger drugs like steroids may be needed. The best thing to do for her is take her into a vet immediately to get this treated.
