My dog's knee is swollen after ACL surgery. Can I wait to see vet?

It takes months for the swelling to completely resolve. Up to 6 months before you see the full benefits of surgery. Also, if he has some arthritis present in the knee then the inside will always have some thickening. Best of luck and I hope he heals well! Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sebastian. It would be best to ha e him seen this weekend. The swelling bothers me. However, if this is not possible then he needs to be seen first thing Monday morning. I would keep him extremely quiet this weekend. This means no running, jumping or stairs. Take him outside on a leash and bring him straight back in so that he cannot play outside. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. Do not give any medications to your dog without the advice of your veterinarian. Many OTC medications can be toxic to pets. Ideally, Ziggy should be examined by your veterinarian or a veterinary orthopedic specialist to diagnose ligament damage, arthritic conditions, fractures or tumors. X-rays of the knees and hips will likely be recommended. These can be done under anesthesia or sedation. A veterinary house all service may be an option for an exam. Afterwards, a sedative and/or pain management can be dispensed to make the trip to the clinic easier and less stressful for all parties.

Poor Maggie. I'm wondering if she injured herself running outside. You can wait until Monday to have her seen. Until then, rest her. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a leash, and bring hr right back in when she's done. Take her into the vet first thing Monday. Ouch, poor Zoey! She sounds quite painful if she won't put weight on the leg. She could have broken a bone, or torn a ligament in her knee. I would rest her tonight, and have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing her swelling and pain, and can treat her for it. It is not likely a blood clot, but may be an injection reaction from a shot he received for the surgery. If he is eating and drinking well, then I would not consider this an emergency but would definitely have your vet check the area tomorrow

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If you can see an an obvious swelling, I recommend taking Trigger to the vet. Many times with mild limping we don't see any swelling at all. So I worry that Trigger may have torn a muscle or have an abscess or other injury that may cause worse problems if left alone. Until he is seen, I recommend keeping him confined (as possible with a pup). If he is crate trained, then keep him crated and leash walks only until he is evaluated to prevent furhter injury. I hope he's back to normal quickly!
