My dog is limping and has a swollen leg. Can I wait until Monday?

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 5 years and 8 months old | 65 lbs

My dog was limping when I came home yesterday. His ankle feel swollen. None of the open clinics in my area have an x ray machine or a vet on duty. Is it ok to wait until Monday?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sebastian. It would be best to ha e him seen this weekend. The swelling bothers me. However, if this is not possible then he needs to be seen first thing Monday morning. I would keep him extremely quiet this weekend. This means no running, jumping or stairs. Take him outside on a leash and bring him straight back in so that he cannot play outside. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. Poor Remi! I recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a leash, and bring her right back in when she's done. If hse still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. My puppy hurt his leg playing, swollen and limping. Is a vet needed?

Ouch, poor Peyton! I would rest him tonight, and then have him seen by a vet in the morning. It could be that he strained a ligament or muscle, but it is concerning that the leg appears to be swollen and he is favoring it. Don't allow him to run, jump, or play tonight. Take Peyton out to toilet on a lead and bring him right back in when he's done. Then have him seen by a vet in the morning to diagnose what is causing the pain so he can be treated. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can prescribe him some safe pain medications as needed.

My dog's leg is swollen and limping after dog park. Is a vet needed?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If you can see an an obvious swelling, I recommend taking Trigger to the vet. Many times with mild limping we don't see any swelling at all. So I worry that Trigger may have torn a muscle or have an abscess or other injury that may cause worse problems if left alone. Until he is seen, I recommend keeping him confined (as possible with a pup). If he is crate trained, then keep him crated and leash walks only until he is evaluated to prevent furhter injury. I hope he's back to normal quickly!

My large dog is limping, won't put weight on his swollen leg?

Do not give any medications to your dog without the advice of your veterinarian. Many OTC medications can be toxic to pets. Ideally, Ziggy should be examined by your veterinarian or a veterinary orthopedic specialist to diagnose ligament damage, arthritic conditions, fractures or tumors. X-rays of the knees and hips will likely be recommended. These can be done under anesthesia or sedation. A veterinary house all service may be an option for an exam. Afterwards, a sedative and/or pain management can be dispensed to make the trip to the clinic easier and less stressful for all parties.

My dog is limping after jumping out of the car. How can I help?

No there is not really any medication we can recommend you give Didier without having examined him. Also, many over the counter medications are not safe to give and it is difficult to get the correct dosing for a small dog. I suggest you just rest him strictly for the next 7 days. Leash walk to go outside to use the toilet only then right back inside. No running, jumping or playing. No stairs if that can be helped. If no improvement within that week or if he gets worse then you should get him to your vet for an exam. If he does seem better after a week then you can go back to GRADUALLY increasing his exercise over the next couple of weeks. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

My dog's leg is swollen, he can't walk. What can I give him?

Unfortunately there are no OTC medications you can give Covie, many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. He sounds extremely painful if he can't walk on his leg, and he cannot wait until Thursday to see a vet. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Dog limping, swollen leg after jumping. It's getting worse, home care?

Poor Lina! If they aren't able to take her to see a vet, then I'm afraid the options are very limited. They can restrict her exercise (short leash walks to potty only, no running or jumping, crate rest the rest of the time) for the next 10 days to see if the swelling and lameness resolve. If there is no improvement with this plan, or if Lina seems excessively painful, then there is really no other option but to see the vet for an exam and x-rays.
