Why is my old GSD's eye swollen, mouth painful, and head tilted?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cosmo. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. I worry that he has an abscess. A tooth root abscess is common in that area of a dog's face. This can occur when there is damage to a large tooth in the back of the mouth. The root can become infected causing a swelling below the eye. Of course, there could be another cause. The veterinarian will examine him and may recommend anesthesia to determine if thisbis the case. The teeth can be cleaned and x-rays taken to look for an abscess. Poor girl! It sounds like she may have edema (fluid filled skin), which can be caused by an infection somewhere. Also if she is unable to blink I suspect some kind of trauma to her nerve or even a stroke event could be the cause. At any rate your newly acquired pet Gypsy certainly needs a good exam by your vet to start. Some bloodwork also is likely needed if she does have confirmed edema. She may need further testing and referral to a specialist if her condition seems to be related to a nerve injury or possible stroke. I do hope that your pet Gypsy gets well soon! Yes, that is a common presentation with a molar tooth infection. The tooth will need to be extracted and they will put Tootsie in antibiotics for the infection. Blood work is usually done before anesthesia and they will scale and polish the teeth and check the rest to make sure they are healthy. Once the mouth is healed then you can start brushing her teeth or using another dental product. They may also put Tootsie on pain medication. That is sure an impressively swollen lip! Poor Claire! This type of swelling could be a few things. Even though your vet thought the teeth look okay, we can't tell what is going on under the gumline, and an abscess from an infected tooth could be a possibility. Autoimmune disease is also a possibility. She could have a ruptured salivary gland. Or it could be something as simple as an insect bite. It is hard to get a full idea of the extent of the swelling from just the pictures alone. A fine needle aspirate, or using a needle to collect some cells from the swollen tissue, could give a better idea of the cause. I hope it is something that goes away quickly. He’s a handsome boy! I recommend a vet visit for Oliver. The swelling could be due to a dental abscess or infection, cancer, infected salivary gland or even a foreign body in his mouth. Though that last maybe less likely if he doesn’t appear bothered by it. But the vet can do a thorough physical and oral exam to try to characterize the lump a little better. Depending on what they see they may Recommend a fine needle aspirate, a dental cleaning and assessment, or biopsy if it appears to be a mass. Ouch! That's quite the reaction. If Lisa still isn't acting herself fully, it is best to schedule a recheck with the vet. There may still be some sort of reaction going on from whatever she got into, or it may be that there is some GI upset from eating the meal still causing symptoms. A complete check including possible x-rays and blood work can help you figure out the cause as well as treatment to help get her feeling better.

I would have Monti evaluated by a veterinarian. I can't diagnose a certain condition from the pictures. From so many different areas, I would be concerned that she could have developed an autoimmune disease or may have liver disease which can sometimes affect the skin. It could also be related to other sources of inflammation, infection, allergies etc. A vet can examine the lesions, and may do a skin scrape or cytology to look at cells under a microscope to see if there is a cause. If she is having trouble getting around because of arthritis, then she may benefit from anti-inflammatories to treat the inflammation of the joint and keep her more comfortable in her older age.
