My senior dog's face is swollen and grew overnight. What to do?

I am suspicious that he has An abscess (infection). In that location it could be from a tooth, or some sort of trauma or migrating foreign object. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon. This likely needs antibiotics, and possibly surgery as well. In the meantime I would warm compress the area several times a day. This may encourage the abscess to drain which is what we want. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.

I do not recommend you give him those pills as they are unlikely to help. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cosmo. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. I worry that he has an abscess. A tooth root abscess is common in that area of a dog's face. This can occur when there is damage to a large tooth in the back of the mouth. The root can become infected causing a swelling below the eye. Of course, there could be another cause. The veterinarian will examine him and may recommend anesthesia to determine if thisbis the case. The teeth can be cleaned and x-rays taken to look for an abscess. We had some problems with clients attaching photos yesterday. And I'm sorry we haven't been able to get to your question until now. Hopefully you have been able to have your vet see Ollie today. There are a few possibilities, but if Ollie had any roots of his teeth that were left behind during his full mouth extraction (which can be common regardless of how careful we are), those roots could form an abscess which would explain the swelling along the face, the enlarged lymph node and the blood in the food. Hopefully he is on some antibiotics and feeling better, but I suspect that your vet will need to sedate him to take some x-rays and determine the source of the problem. Good luck! That is sure an impressively swollen lip! Poor Claire! This type of swelling could be a few things. Even though your vet thought the teeth look okay, we can't tell what is going on under the gumline, and an abscess from an infected tooth could be a possibility. Autoimmune disease is also a possibility. She could have a ruptured salivary gland. Or it could be something as simple as an insect bite. It is hard to get a full idea of the extent of the swelling from just the pictures alone. A fine needle aspirate, or using a needle to collect some cells from the swollen tissue, could give a better idea of the cause. I hope it is something that goes away quickly.
