My dog swallowed my underwear. Is it an emergency? What to do?

Underwear can get stuck in your dog's GI tract. If it does, that requires surgery to fix. If Maxine ate the underwear less than 2 hours ago, take her to your vet to induce vomiting to try to get it out. If it's been longer than 2 hours, you will need to monitor her for signs such as vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, and lethargy. Those signs can indicate the underwear is stuck in her GI tract, and she will need to see a vet immediately.

Oh no, that was naughty of Benji to eat the thong! It's good that he's acting normally, as well as pooping and eating. It can take time for the underwear to pass, but if it still hasn't passed by Monday, I would take him into the vet for an x-ray to see if the thong can be visualized in the intestine. If he stops eating, stops pooping, has diarrhea, starts vomiting, or becomes very lethargic, then rush him into a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Hello. If she is eating, drinking & still passing stools, then she may not need surgery. You definitely want to increase her intake of fluids. Supply low sodium broths or stocks for her to drink in addition to her fresh water. Switch to a wet diet & add a moderate amount of additional liquid to this, but not too much. You do not want to dilute the nutritional density of her food too much. Take 2 slices of bread & slather each piece with a layer of Vaseline & try to get her to eat this a piece at a time. If you can get one slice in her now, you can do the second piece later on or this evening. Hopefully this will lubricate her gut & push the rest of the material out of her. But if she stops eating & vomits everything, becomes bloated or shows abdominal pain, you will need to make a decision about her care. If it has been under 2 hours since he ate the small stuffed animal, I would recommend inducing vomiting with hydrogen peroxide. You can give 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds, so if Barney weighs about 70 pounds, this would be 7 teaspoons. You can use a turkey baster to get it in his mouth. If he doesn’t vomit within 15 minutes, you can give him another 4 teaspoons and see if this works. Do not give any more than this total amount. If he still does not vomit, I recommend bringing him to a veterinarian who can use injectable medication to induce vomiting. The biggest concern with ingestion of a toy is an intestinal obstruction or blockage, which is a surgical emergency. If you cannot get him to a veterinarian now, I recommend watching for signs of obstruction including vomiting, lethargy, decreased appetite, drooling, etc. If you see these signs, he should be seen, and your vet may recommend x rays to look for evidence of an intestinal blockage. Also, monitor his feces for the next 1-3 days to look for the toy. I hope this is helpful!

If it's too late to get him to vomit, you can reasonably expect diarrhea at least. I would withhold food for 12-24 hours to give his gut a chance to rest after this very rich meal. When you start feeding him, only give him a few pieces of kibble at a time, every 30 minutes or so, until he has had his usual meal. If at any time he develops lethargy, fever, repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, or any other adverse symptoms, he should be seen by your vet right away. The plastic could cause a blockage that can seriously damage his intestines.

This could cause gastrointestinal obstruction and should ideally be checked as soon as possible at your local veterinarian. Your veterinarian will probably make him sick with an appropriate medication and perform an xray/abdominal ultrasound to make sure gastrointestinal passage is free.
