My dog swallowed a sock. Will it cause a blockage or pass?

This could cause gastrointestinal obstruction and should ideally be checked as soon as possible at your local veterinarian. This scenario can go one of three ways. You may end up finding the sock and he may not have eaten it at all. This will obviously be the best scenario. The second scenario is he either vomits it up or poops it out. This can happen. The third scenario is he becomes obstructed and needs surgery. I would highly recommend not having him play with socks anymore. Keep a close eye on him. Any vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy I would recommend going to a vet immediately. My biggest concern is that these socks and the material from socks can cause a life threatening foreign body obstruction. I would try your best to pick up all of the sock and material that she likes to chew to prevent this from happening. If you ever think she has swallowed a sock and she isn't showing any signs of sickness, I would feed her a high fiber canned diet for 2-3 days until it passes. If she swallows it and you see it happen, I would take her to your vet so they can make her throw it up. If she is ever showing signs of sickness like vomiting, lethargy, or not wanting to eat, I would have your vet take a look at her. Be sure to tell your vet that she has a history of eating things she shouldn't like socks so they can take x-rays if needed. I hope this helps!

The sock may take longer to pass than normal feces but if it isn't getting caught up anywhere in the intestines, it will likely pass. If you begin to notice any clinical signs such as vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, etc. then I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him and take x-rays of his abdomen to see if the sock has caused an intestinal obstruction. I recommend you watch him closely for signs of a gastrointestinal obstruction such as vomiting, inappetence, nausea and/or abdominal pain and have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment if observed. Cooper needs to be seen by a vet/emergency room right away where they can make him regurgitate the sock with an apomorphine injection. Please take him now. If you hope it may pass, he may end up with a life threatening obstructed bowel and expensive surgery.

At this stage feeding bulky food and monitoring is the best way to go. Signs of intestinal blockage are obvious and you will be able to notice them right away. Dogs with a blockage go off their food, vomit and show abdominal pain. They become weak and lethargic. What is also very important, dogs with a blockage are not passing any stools (soemtimes they try to pass but they are not able to). So, for now keep any eye on your dog and if you see any of these signs get in touch with your way right away. He is a large dog, so there is a good chance that he will pass the piece of leather in his stools.
