My dog swallowed a small screw. Should I worry about it getting stuck?

Poor Lulu. These are definitely of great concern as they can easily puncture the intestines. I would take her to your vet or local emergency clinic and have them take some X-rays to see if they are truly in her. If so, they will likely recommend surgical removal. If that isn’t an option financially, the they may recommend a prescription high fiber canned diet to see if they will pass. The X-rays are important though because depending on the side of the screws compared to the size of the intestines will depend on whether or not they’re will even be a chance for them to pass without surgery. There is a chance that it my pass naturally on its own, however it could also cause an intestinal obstruction, if it gets stuck. So it is much better to have it regurgitated than stuck. This needs to be done within an hour or so.

When there is a sudden switch in diet, that can cause the terrible diarrhea you are seeing. Feed them a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in their normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, they refuses to eat the bland diet, they starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, they will need to see a vet right away. As for the screw, keep an eye on Sasha a bit more closely over the next few days. If you see blood in her poop, she becomes lethargic, has a loss of appetite, starts vomiting, or has any other concerning signs, have her see a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

If the guard is metallic you can take them to a veterinary office to have x-rays performed. It shows up quite obviously. Otherwise, I would just continue to monitor them for the next several days and check their stools for signs of it. If they develop any signs of vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or anorexia,, have them seen by a veterinarian ASAP.

In most cases, a very small foreign object like this will pass through the GI tract with no problems - if this just happened, you can feed him a slice of bread to help add some bulk to his stomach contents, which should help to surround and cushion the staple as it moves through. To be safe, you should monitor him for the next several days for any signs of a problem. If he has repeated episodes of vomiting, begins acting lethargic, or doesn't want to eat, I would recommend taking him to the vet right away since it's possible that he might need surgery to remove the staple. You can observe Bruno closely for signs of a gastrointestinal foreign body. These would include vomiting, decreased appetite, lethargy, abdominal pain, straining to have a bowel movement. If any of these occur, seek veterinary care. Luckily it has been 4 days with no issue, and usually an object will have passed through the GI tract in this amount of time. Also, the bottle cap would easily be seen on an x-ray so it will be very easy to see the problem if he does start acting ill.
