My dog swallowed a remote. X-ray shows pieces. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the pieces are very small they will likely pass through the GI tract and come out in her stool. If you are concerned that the pieces are big and it just happened contact a vet to discuss inducing vomiting. They can decide if the pieces are too big to be thrown up. Otherwise watch for lethargy, belly pain, vomit and not wanting to eat as that can be symptoms of a blockage. I wish Mazzy the best!

Giving Ziey the bread was a good idea. Keep an eye on him for now, and for the next few days, give him a slice of bread with each meal. If you see vomiting, blood in his poop, diarrhea, lethargy, or anorexia, have him seen by a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Hi, it’s VERY important to have him checked over ASAP. An x ray can be takien which will reveal the presence of the battery in the stomach if ingested. If so further action such as emergency removal will be needed. If left in the stomach, batteries can lead to internal organ damage. I would bring along the other battery to your vet ( if same batteries were used ), as this will also provide useful information.

However, it is important to watch closely for clinical signs consistent with an intestinal obstruction such as vomiting, abdominal pain and decreased appetite. If it was ingested within the past hour, you can take him to the ER and have them induce vomiting to see if they can get it back out. That size has a good chance of getting stuck somewhere along the intestinal tract but could potentially pass. Signs of a blockage are vomiting, lack of appetite, belly pain, and/or lethargy.

It will be OK for you to wait until the morning and see how Charlie does overnight. Watch him closely for any vomiting and diarrhea. These are two symptoms of an intestinal blockage. Based on Charlie's size and the photo of the necklace you provided, I think that may pass without incident. Feed him as usual in the morning and see if he can keep the food down. If he does not want to eat then I would be concerned. If you end up taking him to the vet, x-rays can be performed to find the location of the necklace. I hope this helps. It is important to see where the foreign object is and how large it is comparable to his intestines. It may be able to pass in his stool if it is small. If not, he could require surgery to have it removed. If he starts to vomit, refuse food or water or becomes lethargic, these are signs of a blockage. This can indicate an emergency.
