My dog swallowed rawhide. Is it safe for them to digest it?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 10 months old | 7 lbs

My dog infested rawhides treat... instruction label states intend for chew NOT food. Is it ok if they ingest the treat? He doesn’t show any issues with indegestion or change in his behavior. Should I no longer give him rawhides?

As long as the pieces are small, it is fine if they are ingested. He will digest them without any issues. Larger pieces pose a risk of gastric or intestinal obstruction. To be safe, remove the rawhide chews once they can fit entirely in Kai's mouth.
Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

Yes, rawhide is okay to give as long as it does not cause gastrointestinal upset. Monitor your dog and remove or replace once the rawhide piece becomes small enough to swallow whole. Rawhide bones can be rotated. Once a bone becomes soft, remove it and allow to dry. You can do this with several bones.

Raw hides are fine for dogs that can tolerate them, meaning no vomit or diarrhea. Also take it away when the bone is small enough that he could swallow a piece whole. Raw hides are very high calorie treats and should be given in moderation to prevent obesity.

If Riley doesn’t get any tummy upset from the pictured raw hide I see no harm in continuing it.

Hello, at his point, I would not be too concerned. Most times, the rawhide will continue to be digested. If Jack does not have much of an appetite tomorrow morning, just try feeding him a little later in the day. If, however, he starts vomiting, refuses all food, gulps water & vomits afterwards, or seems painful or bloated, then get him to your vet quickly. I have never liked giving any kind of rawhide to pets. Give him more appropriate items to chew such as Nylabones & Kong toys where you can hide food, & just about anything else that a dog can gnaw on without the possibility of breaking off & swallowing whole pieces. My puppy swallowed a beefhide. What are the signs of a blockage?

These are not very digestible, so it may be somewhat concerning depending on the size of it. It's a good sign that he was able to swallow it, because these tend to get stuck in the throat when they are too big. The biggest concern is that the rawhide will get stuck in the intestines. These blockages can cause life-threatening complications. However, most dogs are able to pass various sized objects through their intestines without any problem. Signs of a blockage include vomiting, not defecating and a dramatic decrease in activity. If you notice any of these signs, then it would be best to take Kane to the vet for further evaluation. Otherwise, this should be passed in the stool within the next 3-5 days. I hope that helps and all is well with Kane.

Can my 8-month-old puppy chew rawhide safely? Are there risks?

Daisy is super cute! The decision to give a dog rawhide is always a tricky one. Some dogs never have any problems with rawhide while others get bad stomach upset from them. Some dogs can even swallow a piece that's too big and end up with an intestinal obstruction. Intestinal obstructions are serious and require surgery to correct. I'd monitor Daisy to make sure she doesn't bite off a large piece of rawhide and swallow it as this would make her prone to intestinal obstruction. Remove the rawhide when it gets small as she may swallow it. I'd also watch to make sure she doesn't develop any vomiting or diarrhea. If you see this she should be examined by a veterinarian and rawhide should no longer be given If you want to err on the side of caution then I wouldn't give Daisy rawhide in the future. My dog ate rawhides. How can I help him pass them to avoid blockage?

If he chewed them well then there is a good chance he won't get a blockage. Especially if the rawhides were labeled as easily digestible. Try offering him 1 slice of bread and a soft canned food diet for the next couple of days. Offer him plenty of water and take him on 20-30 minute brisk walks twice a day to encourage GI motility and the passage of the raw hides. Then monitor Chopper for the next 24-72 hrs for any signs of blockage which includes: excessive vomiting (even water), lack of appetite, few feces, and abdominal pain. Best case scenario is that he will just have an upset stomach (mild vomiting and/or diarrhea) that will improve with a bland diet (boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese) after a few days time.

My dog ate rawhide. How long does it take to pass and is he okay?

It typically takes up to 72 hours for something to pass fully, and I would continue to monitor him for now. Three inches of it isn't a large piece, and hopefully it should pass without issue. It is a good sign that he is eating is normal, along with his energy and poop, so I would continue to watch him for the next 48 hours to be safe.

My dog swallowed a no-hide treat. Should I worry if he seems fine?

I do not see any need to worry at this time. If it was stuck in his throat, then he would be continually gagging and coughing. There is also not much of a chance it would be causing problems in the stomach or intestines, because these are digestible. Signs of a blockage are: not eating, not pooping, vomiting, and acting very depressed/painful. If you happen to see these signs, then this would warrant an urgent trip to the vet. Otherwise, he seems to be doing OK, so I wouldn't be concerned. I hope that helps and all is well with Coby.
