Should I worry about my dog's surgical drain having no bandage?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 48 lbs

My dog just had to have surgery to clean and re-stitch a wound she received from a run in with a Stag last week and her not being given antibiotics afterwards. They surgeon today has left a drainage hose in the side of her, but not put on any sort of bandage. Is that normal? Should I be worried about the wound not being dressed and her coming home?

Yes, this sounds normal. If she has a drain in place, you don't want to cover this with a bandage or else it won't drain properly. Your veterinarian should give instructions about how to care for the drain at home for the next few days - usually just keeping the openings clean, and keeping an e-collar (plastic cone) on her to make sure she doesn't chew it out.
